Mario’s Rainbow Castle

Mario’s Rainbow Castle is the sixth board in the original Mario Party for the Nintendo 64.

Board Map

Another one-way board! There’s a single Star at the end of the path that doesn’t move after a Star purchase. Two junctions, but the secondary paths route back to the main path pretty quickly.

Overview

Mario’s Rainbow Castle features a mostly linear path with a tower waits at the end. At the tower you’ll be greeted by either Toad or Bowser, where you’ll either be able to purchase a Star from Toad for 20 coins or be forced to purchase a Ztar for 40 coins, or whatever you have on hand if you don’t have enough. After your visit, you’ll be sent back to the start of the board.

Although the Toad controls the tower when the board starts, the tower will rotate and swap between the two characters throughout the match. Every time you visit and return to the start of the board, the tower will swap. Landing on any of the five Happening Spaces will also trigger a swap at the tower.

And that’s about it for this board! There’s a Boo if you take the longer route shortly before the midway point of the map, and good ol’ Koopa Troopa is at the start to hand out 10 coins to everyone that passes.

Not enough rainbows at this floating castle, apparently. Claim first place to help bring rainbows back to the castle, then watch the top three players climb up the newly formed rainbow bridge where they can celebrate in the sky. Regrettably, last place slips off the bridge and falls past the clouds. Don’t worry, Lakitu has it handled.

List of Events

Events spice up gameplay and (usually) give you a little more control over the strategy of the board. There are two types of events. Happening Events are those that activate when you land on a Happening Space. Passing Events are those that are triggered when you simply walk past the event rather than landing on it. Here’s what Mario’s Rainbow Castle has going on:

Passing Event

At the tower at the end of the board, you’ll be greeted by either Toad or Bowser. If it’s Toad, you can purchase a Star for 20 coins. If it’s Bowser, you’ll be forced to pay 40 coins, or whatever you have on hand if you don’t have enough, to get a Ztar. Don’t worry, these won’t also subtract from you Star count. Once you’re done, you’ll be sent to the start of the board and the tower will rotate characters.

Happening Event

Land on any of the five Happening Spaces on this board to swap out the characters at the tower.

Item Availability

Unlike the rest of the Mario Party games that follow, the original does not have much of an item system. Instead, the Mushroom Bank lets you activate and deactivate certain items before you start a board. These items have features like typical Mario Party items, but they will only appear when they randomly activate at the start of a player’s turn. Two extra items let you disable specific passing events.
