Luigi’s Engine Room

Luigi’s Engine Room is the fifth board in the original Mario Party for the Nintendo 64.

Board Map

Luigi’s Engine Room features a main junction that splits into three paths, each ultimately leading to a warp pipe that’ll send you back to the start. There are seven possible Star locations on this map. Remember, once a Star has occupied a space, it won’t return to that spot until all seven locations have been used.

Overview

Luigi’s Engine Room introduces the alternating path gimmick, where red and blue doors restrict access at certain junctions. If the red doors are up and don’t allow anyone to cross, then the blue doors are lowered and keep that path open. At the start of every turn, the red and blue door alternate, so any red doors that were up are now down, and the same for the blue doors. There are five junctions with alternating doors, and only the first junction at the start of the board is free of doors.

The doors are constantly swapping, so it can be tricky to plan out your route through the full board. Landing on any of the three lone Happening Spaces will force the doors to switch in that moment, even if the doors just swapped at the start of the turn. The robot Pisudon will also swap the doors if you pay it 20 coins, and you can find the robot at the start of the board and along the right-hand path.

Pass Bowser and he’ll give you a coin! But he’ll charge you 20 coins anyway. A single Boo waits on the path leading back to the start, but every warp pipe will spit players out right before the ghost, so expect a lot of Star-stealing. A Koopa Troopa handing out 10 coins can be found at the start of the board, like always.

Why is everyone running around collecting Stars in an engine room? Turns out that’s what’ll power up the engine. Complete the board to boot up the engine, and you’ll soon step outside to find out you’re riding on one of those flying ships from Super Mario 64. Well, mostly everyone finds out. If you got last place, you’re left behind in the engine where the steam generators will get ya.

  • Take note of your opponent’s location on the board if you’re near the door robot, and ABSOLUTELY switch the door to prevent Star grinding.

List of Events

Events spice up gameplay and (usually) give you a little more control over the strategy of the board. There are two types of events. Happening Events are those that activate when you land on a Happening Space. Passing Events are those that are triggered when you simply walk past the event rather than landing on it. Here’s what Luigi’s Engine Room has going on:

Passing Event

Reach Pisudon and pay it 20 coins to immediately raise and lower the red and blue doors. Find Pisudon near the start right after the first junction and shortly down the right-hand path after the first door junction.

Happening Event

There are three lone Happening Spaces around the board. Land on any of them to immediately swap the red and blue doors.

Happening Event

In the top-left corner of the board are two Happening Spaces in a row. Land on either and you’ll get moved to the upper path that leads to another warp pipe.

Passing Event

Reach Bowser on the left side of the board and he’ll use his machine to create you a single coin, but he also charges you 20 coins for it. That single coin counts towards your total, at least! If you have less than 20 coins, Bowser will snatch them all, and you won’t get that single coin either.

Item Availability

Unlike the rest of the Mario Party games that follow, the original does not have much of an item system. Instead, the Mushroom Bank lets you activate and deactivate certain items before you start a board. These items have features like typical Mario Party items, but they will only appear when they randomly activate at the start of a player’s turn. Two extra items let you disable specific passing events.
