Eternal Star

Eternal Star is an unlockable board and the eighth board in the original Mario Party for the Nintendo 64.

Board Map

Alright, buckle in. This is about to get confusing. Eternal Star takes place on a giant star broken into several pieces. Each piece functions like an island, and you can move from island to island by using warps at junctions or at the end of a path. Each warp will go to the same location each time you use it, but it depends which of three Warp Courses are currently at play. Luckily, we have three (admittedly shoddy) maps outlining each Warp Course layout.

Overview

Toad is no more! Instead of finding Toad and throwing him 20 coins to get a Star, a group of Baby Bowser are handing out the Stars. Once you reach a Baby Bowser, pay 20 coins to challenge him to a dice battle where you’ll earn a Star for rolling the highest number. Low below Baby Bowser and he’ll take a Star instead. Your rolls will always be either 8, 9, or 10, and Baby Bowser will roll the standard 1-10 dice block, so the odds are always in your favor.

Did I mention there are seven of these Baby Bowsers and they all appear on the board at the same time? Each time someone gets a Star, that Baby Bowser will be removed from the map. Once all seven Baby Bowsers have been dealt with, they will all return and start the cycle over.

Like it was broken down in our map overview, Eternal Star consists of several floating islands (re: broken star pieces). Warp machines at junctions and at the end of pathways will move you from island to island, and the spots you warp to won’t change, at least within the duration of a specific Warp Course. There are three Warp Courses and each one has a unique layout in terms of which warps connect with each other.

The board always starts on a random Warp Course. To change it, visit Bowser on his lone island. He’ll take a Star from you if you have it, otherwise it’ll be up to 20 coins, and then he’ll send you back to start and change the current Warp Course. Thankfully, he’ll tell you which Warp Course he switched the board to. Every time someone lands on a Happening Space, Bowser will send everyone back to start without changing the Warp Course.

No Koopa Troopa on this board! But you still have a Boo you can use to steal coins or a Star. At the end of the game, all the Stars you collected will unite the broken star pieces and form a rideable star that all the players hop on. No fourth place scene on this board either! Bowser and Baby Bowser get knocked out of orbit in the process, so they can count as the losers of the board!

To unlock Eternal Star, collect 100 stars and play the seven other boards at least once. Return to Mushroom Village, enter the Mushroom Bank, read Bowser’s note, enter the Warp Pipe, and pick Eternal Star in the board select.

List of Events

Events spice up gameplay and (usually) give you a little more control over the strategy of the board. There are two types of events. Happening Events are those that activate when you land on a Happening Space. Passing Events are those that are triggered when you simply walk past the event rather than landing on it. Here’s what Eternal Star has going on:

Passing Event

Baby Bowsers replace Toad on this board. Pay Baby Bowser 20 coins to challenge him to a dice battle. Roll a higher number than him to get a Star. Roll lower and he’ll take a Star, or up to 20 coins if you don’t have one. You’ll always roll an 8, 9, or 10 whereas Baby Bowser rolls the standard 1-10 dice block, so your odds are always better.

Passing Event

To travel between the broken star islands, use warps at junctions and at the end of pathways. Warps will always go to the same location unless the Warp Course layout is changed. There are three Warp Courses.

Passing Event

Reach Bowser and he’ll steal a Star from you. Brutal. If you don’t have a Star, he’ll steal up to 20 coins. Once that’s done, he’ll send you back to start and change the current Warp Course. He’ll even tell you which Warp Course he switches to.

Happening Event

Land on any of the three Happening Spaces to get you and the rest of the players sent back to the start of the board. This does not change the Warp Course layout.

Item Availability

Unlike the rest of the Mario Party games that follow, the original does not have much of an item system. Instead, the Mushroom Bank lets you activate and deactivate certain items before you start a board. These items have features like typical Mario Party items, but they will only appear when they randomly activate at the start of a player’s turn. Two extra items let you disable specific passing events.
