DK’s Jungle Adventure is the first board in the original Mario Party for the Nintendo 64.
Board Map
This is what we call a beginner board, so there’s not too much going on here in terms of the board layout. From the starting spot in the bottom left, you’ll start moving upward before hitting the first of many junction. There are seven possible Star locations on this map. Remember, once a Star has occupied a space, it won’t return to that spot until all seven locations have been used.
Overview
As an introductory board, DK’s Jungle Adventure keeps it simple. Your objective is to collect Stars by paying 20 coins from the rotating Star spots. The board is made up of two major loops, each consisting of junctions that ultimately lead back to the start of the board.
The junctions serve as the primary gimmick of this board. Each intersection is guarded by either a Whomp or a Coin Stone. To pick the direction you actually want to go, you’ll need to have some cash in hand, otherwise you’re going down the currently open path. Elsewhere in events, a rolling stone can be activated by landing on a Happening Space. Anyone caught in its path will be sent close to the start of the board.
Like all boards in the original Mario Party, there’s a story at play in DK’s Jungle Adventure. Somewhere in the ruins lies a “great treasure.” At the end of the match, all the Stars come together and open the chest hiding the Golden Banana Bunch. If you won the board, it’s yours! This is all just for show, and you don’t see the item again after exiting the board. Get last place and you’ll be chased by the rolling stone.

- If you’re in dire need for coins or want to farm for Coin Star, use the bottom-right section of the board! Lots of blue spaces and an easy 10 coin gift from Koopa.

List of Events
Events spice up gameplay and (usually) give you a little more control over the strategy of the board. There are two types of events. Happening Events are those that activate when you land on a Happening Space. Passing Events are those that are triggered when you simply walk past the event rather than landing on it. Here’s what DK’s Jungle Adventure has going on:
Passing Event
Whomp tolls guard three different junctions. If a Whomp is blocking the path you want to take, pay the giant gray slab fee of 10 coins and it’ll let you pass. After you pass, the Whomp will return to the path it was guarding. If you don’t pay and pick the open path instead, the Whomp will swap places and guard the path you just went down.
Passing Event
There are two Coin Stones that each block their own path at a junction. You need to have at least 20 coins to be able to pass through, otherwise you’re forced down the open path.
Happening Event
Every Happening Space on this board does the same thing — send a giant boulder rolling through the board, starting at the top right before pivoting straight down the middle of the board. Any players caught in its path will get moved to the bottom right portion of the board where they’ll land on and gain coins from a blue space. Landed on the space while the boulder’s path is clear of players? Nothing happens!

Item Availability
Unlike the rest of the Mario Party games that follow, the original does not have much of an item system. Instead, the Mushroom Bank lets you activate and deactivate certain items before you start a board. These items have features like typical Mario Party items, but they will only appear when they randomly activate at the start of a player’s turn. Two extra items let you disable specific passing events.
Available Items
All items are available in DK’s Jungle Adventure.
