Find the location of every Moon Coin in World Star in our New Super Mario Bros. 2 walkthrough and guide, complete with images.
There are 24 Moon Coins to collect in World Star. Moon Coins function the same way as Star Coins and exclusive to World Star. These collectibles can be found in the eight main levels of this world, with each containing three Moon Coins. There’s also a bonus rainbow course but it does not feature any Moon Coins. World Star is unlocked after after complete World 6-Castle and having at least 90 Star Coins collected.
Our Moon Coins guide lists each coin in the order that they appear in the level. We’ll make note if a specific power-up is required to snag the Moon Coin!
World Star-1
Moon Coin 1
You’ll see this Moon Coin after the first windmill of blocks. Hit the block to the right and step on the P Switch. Jump and fall through the coins to find a large empty area with tons of coins. Once P-Switch timer ends, go in the pipe to get launched into the Moon Coin.
Moon Coin 2
The Moon Coin is to the lower right of the second block windmill after the Checkpoint Flag. To get it, you’ll need a Koopa Troopa shell. Get past the Moon Coin make an opening in the brick block with a ground pound. Then use the nearby Koopa Troopa by tossing its shell into the opening you created. If it’s low enough, the shell will grab the Moon Coin.
Moon Coin 3
Just before the flagpole is a Moon Coin and a ? Switch. Don’t hit the switch until you’ve collected the Moon Coin. Instead, reveal the P Switch in the blocks to the left to clear our the brick blocks and opening a path to the Moon Coin.
World Star-2
Moon Coin 1
This one is above one of the moving platforms. A simple jump will suffice.
Moon Coin 2
The next Moon Coin is right after the Checkpoint Flag, but as it’s in a pit. You’ll need jump over to the Koopa Troopa to the right and grab its shell. Use the moving platform to lift you back up to the area above, then toss the shell at the Moon Coin.
Moon Coin 3
The last Moon Coin is under a group of Donut Lifts. If you’re confident in your jumping and reaction times, stay on the middle Donut Lift and let it fall with you still aboard. Once you touch the Moon Coin, jump back to safety! The old Koopa Troopa shell method works here too.
World Star-3
Moon Coin 1
When you see the first Super Whomp and a blue pipe to its left, dive into the water to the left of the pipe and enter the hole in the floor. You’ll end up in a room with Peepas surrounding a Moon Coin. You’ll have to stay swimming in the middle as there are currents at the top and bottom that will push you to the left.
Moon Coin 2
After the Checkpoint Flag, pass the Super Whomp and the two Whomps. When you land on the platform to the right of the Whomps with two Peepas circling it, a brick block platform will appear to your left. Use it to jump up to a small platform that is above the Whomps, and the Moon Coin will be an easy grab.
Moon Coin 3
Find the Super Whomp hiding the red ring. Continue right to the next Super Whomp, and when it falls over, jump off its left side to land on a platform with coins directing you to jump left. Do so, and you’ll land on two platforms above the earlier Super Whomp. A vine is hidden above the coins on the left platform. Climb the beanstalk, and the last Moon Coin is behind the Super Whomp here. Lots of Peepas in this room too!
World Star-4
Moon Coin 1
While this Moon Coin doesn’t require a Mini Mushroom, you’re going to want to grab it from the first Question Block in the auto-scrolling room for the other two Moon Coins. When you see the second Koopa Troopa, jump to the log platform above and to its left to grab the first Moon Coin.
Moon Coin 2
If you made it the end of the scrolling section as Mini Mario, congrats! You can now enter the mini pipe below the main exit. In the next room, run across the water as it’s either moving up or down to catch the Moon Coin in the middle of the room.
Moon Coin 3
In the next scrolling section, you’ll see a series of moving platforms oscillating in a wave. The Moon Coin is between the third and fourth moving platforms at the trough of their movement. If you’re daring, you could run under the platforms and across the water when the Porcupuffer is on the far left, but it might be safer to just wait on the third or fourth platform and grab the Moon Coin that way. You’ll have time to give the standing attempt a few good tries.
World Star-5
Moon Coin 1
Lure the Lakitu to the three blue mushroom platforms and two Question Blocks. Defeat it and ride the cloud up, following the coin trail and picking up the Moon Coin.
Moon Coin 2
The next Moon Coin is precariously placed under a low level set of weighted platforms. The Koopa Troopa offsets your weight so you’ll want to get rid of it so the left platform dips low enough for you to grab the Moon Coin.
Moon Coin 3
After the Koopa Troopa and two ground level blocks, you will be tackling some wieghted platforms with a Lakitu in hot pursuit. Defeat it and ride it up above the third pair of weighted platforms into a pipe in the sky. A Moon Coin is among the coin cache in the room you enter.
World Star-6
Moon Coin 1
Be careful of Fishbones as you grab this Moon Coin above the top path.
Moon Coin 2
Go up the pink pipe and claim the Moon Coin inside by using the coin trails to evade the Fishbones.
Moon Coin 3
This Moon Coin is at the end of the scrolling water section, protected by Fishbones. Like always, try to get their attention and then swim up to clear the area.
World Star-7
Moon Coin 1
An easy one to spot. You’ll want to run and jump at the Moon Coin just as the Podoboo begins its descent, otherwise it’ll hop up again and hit you.
Moon Coin 2
There is a set of two Question Blocks to the right of the Checkpoint Flag. Jump in between them to reveal a beanstalk, and climb it. Do your best to dodge the fireballs and firebars as you make your way across the Donut Lifts, and the Moon Coin is yours after you make the Donut Lift with the sign destabilize and fall.
Moon Coin 3
Another easily found Moon Coin. Do your best to dodge the fireballs from the right and the arcing fireballs from the lava as you snag the Moon Coin from above the donut lift.
World Star-Castle
Moon Coin 1
You’ll have to hide in front of brick walls in order not to get turned into stone by the Koopalings. The first Moon Coin is on a low metal fence. It’s best to wait for the spell to have fired before going for this one, and beware the buzzsaw as you continue on.
Moon Coin 2
Take refuge on the rope and in front of the brick wall. When the spell is over, drop down and run across the Donut Lifts to grab the Moon Coin.
Moon Coin 3
This is it, the last Moon Coin! And it’s a tough one. In the second Koopalings section, ride the Snake Block past the first protective brick wall. Quickly jump onto the metal fence to trigger the appearance of the Moon Coin. With lightning speed, hop on the rope and grab the Moon Coin, then drop back onto the Snake Block and to the safety of the next brick wall before you get turned to stone. The Super Leaf works wonders here.
If you want to make this easier, enter the level with a Star in your inventory that will let you bypass the Koopalings and their spell. A Star House appears at the start of World Star once you collect every Star Coin in the game.
