Find the location of every Star Coin in World 4 in our New Super Mario Bros. 2 walkthrough and guide, complete with images.
There are 33 Star Coins to collect in World 4. These collectibles can be found in the eleven main levels of this world, with each containing three Star Coins. There’s also a bonus rainbow course but it does not feature any Star Coins. World 4 is unlocked after defeating Wendy Koopa in World 3. Defeating Morton Koopa in this world’s castle level will unlock World 5.

World 4-1
Star Coin 1
This first coin is at the bottom of pit of spiked balls. Hand above the Donut Lift and drop once the spiked balls have moved farther away. Standing on the Donut Lift will cause it to drop, sending you right to the Star Coin.
Star Coin 2
Above the Checkpoint Flag is a Star Coin. To get there, use a Super Leaf to run across the bumpy path and fly up to the lined platforms above. Alternatively, there’s a hidden block you can use to reach the area above.
Star Coin 3
Exit the second ice cave and you’ll find a Gold Ring. Before heading towards it, face to the left and run and jump up to a secret path in the ice cave wall. Star Coin is at the end!
World 4-Ghost House
Star Coin 1
Once you reach the blocks that move down or up when you step on them, continue riding the block that moves you up to find a Star Coin up above.
Star Coin 2
When you see the arrow sign pointing down to the hole with coins, jump in, but wall jump to stay in the upper portion of this narrow space. The walls will continue moving to the right and the Star Coin will come into view.
Star Coin 3
Just after the second Star Coin, you’ll see a P Switch on the ceiling. Ignore it and use that time to quickly get through the steps on the right. If you’re fast enough, you’ll see a Star Coin on the left, assuming the incoming wall hasn’t blocked it already.
World 4-2
Star Coin 1
Bounce off one of the Koopa Troopas to get a boost high enough to reach the Star Coin. You can also run and hop off the red pipe to reach it.
Star Coin 2
After the Checkpoint Flag, enter the short red pipe. Underground, use the Buzzy Beetle to hit the break the initial brick block. Quickly follow it down to the area below where it’ll start to hit each POW Block. You need to reach the brick blocks above the third POW Block before the Buzzy Beetle gets to it in order to reach the Star Coin.
Star Coin 3
This one is right before the flagpole. One Star Coin and one Koopa Troopa. Grab the shell of the turtle and fling it towards the Star Coin to collect it!
World 4-A
Star Coin 1
Avoid the springing Goombas as you look for the two brick blocks wedged within the orange platforms. As long as you are not Small Mario, ground pound the brick blocks to break through to the lower section. Start making your way to the left, avoiding the Goombas and not holding the run button to get an extra boost. The Star Coin is at the end!
Star Coin 2
Bounce on the mushroom under the second Star Coin, then bounce off a Goomba when its midair to get an extra boost that get you to the Star Coin. Alternatively, run and jump from the ledge under the blue pipe on the left.
Star Coin 3
Mini Mushroom required Another lower area where Goombas are spinging about. Ground pound the Question Block at the start to have a Mini Mushroom spawn. You can’t reach it, but it does start to move to the right. Run to the right and hop over the pipes and wait for the Mini Mushroom to pass through the tiny passage. Once you’re Mini Mario, run inside and claim your Star Coin.
World 4-Tower
Star Coin 1
As the platform raises you higher into the tower, look for the first Star Coin next to two Dry Piranha Plants. Use the Buzzy Beetle from earlier in the level to take out both enemies and collect the Star Coin in the process.
Star Coin 2
Mini Mario required. Before you enter the level, you need to be Mini Mario. There’s a nearby Toad House outside the level that you can enter to grab a Mini Mushroom. Reach the top of the first scrolling area of the level and enter the mini pipe on the right side in the area below the door. The second Star Coin is inside.
Star Coin 3
Like the first Star Coin, this Star Coin will appear as you are slowly moved up the tower. Use the Buzzy Beetles to clear the are of Dry Piranha Plants as they’ll get in the way of your Star Coin!
World 4-B
Star Coin 1
The first Star Coin waits at the bottom of the third ring of Amps. Instead of grabbing it from the front, go around follow the Amp’s path to grab it without getting hurt.
Star Coin 2
After the Checkpoint Flag is be large column of brick blocks. Smash through them with a ground pound and slide down to a new area. Wait for an opening in the ring of Amps and jump upwards until you get the second Star Coin.
Star Coin 3
The last Star Coin will be in yet another ring of Amps. Grab the Koopa Troopa shell from the area just before and throw it at the Star Coin. It’s as simple as that.
World 4-3
Star Coin 1
From the start of the level, grab the Koopa Troopa and throw its shell forward. Follow it as it slams through enemies and eventually through a brick block shielding a Star Coin. Use the Gold Ring to get coins while you’re at it! You can also bring the shell to the brick block if you don’t want to chase it.
Star Coin 2
From the Checkpoint Flag, get a running start on the slippery ice and jump between the gap and the Piranha Plants. The speed should get you high enough to reach the Star Coin! Use a Fire Flower to clear out the enemies if you’re worried about landing on them.
Star Coin 3
After pressing the Blue Coin P Switch, as you slide down to collect the Blue Coins, but jump to reach a ledge on the right early on. From there, jump to the right to reach the third Star Coin.
World 4-4
Star Coin 1
On the second set of weighted platforms, make the the left side rise by standing on the right side for just the right amount of time. Remember, standing on it for too long will cause the other platform to snap off. Once the left platform is higher, jump on it and quickly use its new height to reach the Star Coin.
Star Coin 2
Just before the Checkpoint Flag is a lone brick block on the side of a wall. Do not ground pound it! Instead, use the nearby Koopa Troopa and throw its shell at the block. A vine will sprout that you can climb to reach a bonus area above. Once in the next room, hop on the comedically fast swinging mushrooms and use them to reach the Star Coin above.
Star Coin 3
Near the end, take note of two sets of weighted platforms. Try to get one of the platforms to its highest point, then jump off it to reach the Star Coin.
World 4-C
Star Coin 1
Don’t be too hasty! Instead of hitting the POW blocks below this Star Coin, use them to reach the Star Coin. first Star Coin.
Star Coin 2
Just past the Checkpoint Flag, move up the four horizontal platforms but go to your left when you reach the top. Avoid the Big Fuzzy and enter the green pipe. In the next room, wait for the Fuzzys to be as close to the center as possible, then jump and hit the POW Block. This should clear out most of the enemies allowing you to reach the Star Coin.
Star Coin 3
Before entering the pipe that takes you to the flagpole, wait for the Giant Fuzzy on the right to move out of the way, then wall jump up the right most hole to reach the last Star Coin.
World 4-5
Star Coin 1
In the first half of the level, look for a yellow pipe in the ceiling. Enter it and you’ll see a Star Coin at the bottom of pipes pushing water upward. Avoid the Cheep Cheep and ground pound above the Star Coin to get enough momentum to grab it.
Star Coin 2
A Star Coin out in the open? Is this real? Yeah, but an invisible row of blocks will stop you from swimming up to it. But don’t worry, the solution is simple. Continue swimming past it and go upward. Ignore the sign pointing to the right and drop down to the Star Coin from above.
Star Coin 3
Near the end of the level is an open space with short rows of Cheep Cheep. Float down to the seafloor and you’ll see a sign pointing to a green pipe. Head inside, and hit the switch in the next room to temporarily stop the water flow, allowing you to reach the Star Coin.
World 4-Castle
Star Coin 1
Don’t collect the coins before the P Switch! Instead, hit the P Switch, then quickly backtrack up to the blocks and use them to jump above the Star Coin. It’s open up there, so you’ll get it!
Star Coin 2
After passing the Checkpoint Flag, look for the giant spike ball guarding the Star Coin. The moving Snake Block gives the spike ball a chance to move, which in turn gives you just enough time to drop in, grab the Star Coin, and drop out.
Star Coin 3
In the second half of the level, look for a red pipe after a Fire Bar. Head into the pipe to find a room with spike ball riding along moving Snake Blocks. To get the Star Coin at the top, jump onto the Snake Blocks while only landing on the left side of each one. The spike balls will always stay on the right side.
