Find the location of every Star Coin in World 1 in our New Super Mario Bros. 2 walkthrough and guide, complete with images.
There are 24 Star Coins to collect in World 1. These collectibles can be found in the eight main levels of this world, with each containing three Star Coins. There’s also a bonus rainbow course and cannon course, but neither of these feature Star Coins. World 1 is unlocked from the start. Defeating Roy Koopa in the castle level will unlock World 2.

World 1-1
Star Coin 1
Use the Jump Blocks to reach the Star Coin near the start of the level.
Star Coin 2
Once you see the Star Coin surrounded by brick block, use the Jump Blocks to smash through the bricks. Small Mario can’t smash through brick blocks, so make sure you’ve grabbed a power-up beforehand.
Star Coin 3
Enter the green pipe right before the third set of Jump Blocks. After being blasted into the sky, hit the P-switch and run across the path of bricks to find a Star Coin at the end.
World 1-2
Star Coin 1
Eventually, you’ll see bricks and 2 red POW blocks, ground pound the blocks on the left side, grab the red Koopa shell, and throw it at the block to sang the Star coin.
Star Coin 2
After Star Coin 1, you’ll see a yellow pipe. Go down it to find a P Switch in the next area. Hit it, then run to the right, jump up, and run to the left before the coins turn back into blocks.
Star Coin 3
Fire Flower required. Chuck loads of fireballs into the grey pipe to get a Mega Mushroom to burst out of the pipe. Grab it to quadruple your size, then run to the right as fast as you can. Smash through all the blocks, including the ones surrounding a Star Coin near the end of the level.
World 1-3
Star Coin 1
Super Leaf required.Near the beginning of the level, look for a long stretch of enemies. Clear the path of enemies and run from the left to the right until your P bar is full. At the sign with the arrow, fly up and follow the line of coins until you land on a tree with a Star Coin floating above.
Star Coin 2
Super Leaf required. After grabbing the first Star Coin, fly to the right as Raccoon Mario until you reach the top of the next tree. Enter the green pipe to find a bonus room with a Star Coin waiting in the clouds.
Star Coin 3
Just after the Red Ring, a stack of bricks cover the path to the last Star Coin. Use Raccoon Mario or the Koopa Paratroopa to remove the bricks.
World 1-Tower
Star Coin 1
Before the Checkpoint Flag, look for a Star Coin to your left. Use a wall jump to reach the coin.
Star Coin 1
Enter the red pipe just past the Checkpoint Flag. Inside, hit the P-Switch and hop on top of the rightmost green Snake Block platforms to move upward. Jump into the area above, then quickly use the brick blocks to reach the Star Coin before time runs out.
Star Coin 1
Just after exiting the room with the second Star Coin, head upwards and maneuver your way around the Dry Piranha Plants to collect the last Star Coin.
World 1-4
Star Coin 1
A simple Star Coin found to the left of the Gold Ring.
Star Coin 2
To the right of the spinning ring of coins should be a blue pipe in the sky. Enter it and run to the right to find a Star Coin at the end.
Star Coin 3
After the Red Ring, look for four blocks with a curiously empty space between them. Hit the empty space from below to reveal a secret vine. Climb it to find a bonus area. Hit the P-Switch and begin to make your way to the top of the brick tower. Use a wall jump to reach the Star Coin at the top!
World 1-5
Star Coin 1
Avoid the blue Deep Cheep and collect the first Star Coin.
Star Coin 2
Right after the first Star Coin, look for a yellow pipe. Enter it to find a room with a Star Coin at the bottom. Swim down, but mash the swim button to avoid getting sucked in all the way.
Star Coin 3
Close to the end of the stage, a small opening in the ceiling can be swam through to a room with the last Star Coin. It’s easy to miss!
World 1-A
Star Coin 1
Near the start of the level, look for a yellow gate blocked by two bricks. Ground pound through to reach the room with the first Star Coin.
Star Coin 2
Pass the Coin Roulette Block and go past the first yellow gate. The now opened gate is blocking the second Star Coin, so slowly move onto the second yellow gate and stop when the first gate closes. Now you can grab the Star Coin before getting locked out.
Star Coin 3
At the end of the level are four pipes pointing in different directions with Piranha Plants inside. Hit the hidden block that is placed right under the entrance of the horizontal pipe. Enter the pipe to find a room with a Super Piranha Plant and the last Star Coin. Throw the Koopa Troopa’s shell at the enemy to clear the path and snag the Star Coin in the process!
World 1-Castle
Star Coin 1
While moving across the tightrope, drop down to the bobbing pillars next to the Star Coin. A smaller pillar will emerge beneath the Star Coin allowing you to grab it.
Star Coin 2
Super Leaf required. Just after the first Star Coin, you should come across two sets of blocks. Above them are two hidden blocks that will allow you to move to a higher platform. There, use a Super Leaf to fly through the sky to the second Star Coin.
Star Coin 3
Near the end of the level, you will see a Star Coin under unbreakable blocks. Have the Whomp break through the blocks twice to gain access to the Star Coin.
