Find the location of every Star Coin in World 5 in our New Super Mario Bros. 2 walkthrough and guide, complete with images.
There are 30 Star Coins to collect in World 5. These collectibles can be found in the ten main levels of this world, with each containing three Star Coins. There’s also a bonus rainbow course but it does not feature any Star Coins. World 5 is unlocked after defeating Morton Koopa in World 4. Defeating Ludwig Koopa in this world’s castle level will unlock World 6.

World 5-1
Star Coin 1
Near the beginning, rotating set of four block rows. Use the rope to jump up on top of one of the blocks. Ride it up a bit higher, then jump to your right where the Star Coin is at.
Star Coin 2
After the Checkpoint Flag is a Star Coin trapped inside three ropes. Stand on the top rope and wait for Mario to lose balance and fall below into the Star Coin. Don’t worry, the other ropes will catch your fall.
Star Coin 3
After the second Star Coin you will see a yellow block with a tightrope to the left of it. Use it to jump to the tightrope above the block. It’s kind of finnicky to get the full boost, but it’s possible. Stand in the center of the rope and jump to reveal a hidden block and beanstalk. Climb it, then bounce of the Paratroopas until you get the Star Coin circling the enemies.
World 5-2
Star Coin 1
Just before the Checkpoint Flag, grab the Star Coin surrounded by pipes with Piranha Plants. Wait for them disappear to go in and grab it. Fire Flower works too!
Star Coin 2
Above the Checkpoint Flag area is a small platform with a P Switch. While you are in a Lakitu Cloud, hit the switch and follow the blue coins to a green pipe. In the next room, use the Koopa Troopa’s Shell to knock out all the Piranha Plants and grab the Star Coin. Activate the Gold Ring for lots of coins!
Star Coin 3
Right before the flagpole is a small yellow block. Hop on it and grab a Lakitu Cloud. Follow the line of coins above the block to a green pipe. Inside, grab another Lakitu cloud, enter the Gold Ring, and grab the Star Coin at the end.
World 5-Ghost House
Star Coin 1
On the second brick chandelier, slip down to the lower rows move to the the very bottom. Wait for it to swing to the right, then hop on the small platform where the first Star Coin is at.
Star Coin 2
In the room with all the ropes, climb the second rope and follow the path of coins that gradually appear. It’s not a trick! They lead to a Star Coin at the top of the room.
Star Coin 3
Now go up the third rope. Watch as the steps of the chairs disappear. Time your jumps after they appear and make your way to the top where the last Star Coin is at.
World 5-3
Star Coin 1
After the Checkpoint Flag, you will come across three green pipes. Enter the pipe on the right and it’ll blast you to the first Star Coin. It’s possible to head back to the three warp pipes!
Star Coin 2
Mini Mushroom required. Return to the three warp pipes near the Checkpoint Flag and this time enter the pipe in the middle. Hop on top of the block and jump to reveal a hidden block with a Mini Mushroom. Grab it and start jumping across the mini warp pipes on the right. Once you reach the large pipe, enter it and it will throw you right at the Star Coin.
Star Coin 3
Right before the end of the level, enter the third of five pipes. This will launch you right at the third Star Coin. If you’re coming from the second Star Coin, you can drop directly down to get to the pipes.
World 5-Tower
Star Coin 1
As you are clinging to the giant metal grate and you pass the first two fire burners, look for a Star Coin off to your right. Jump onto the smaller grate and jump up to grab the Star Coin.
Star Coin 2
After the Checkpoint Flag and back on the moving grate, wait for the grate to split in two. Stay on the right side and close enough to the second Star Coin to jump on the ledge its on.
Star Coin 3
Head back to the other side of the moving grate! The side that split left will lead to the third Star Coin. This one is also on a ledge and after a fire burner, so make it quick and jump back onto the grate.
World 5-4
Star Coin 1
After the Gold Ring is a Coin Star in a gap. Grab a nearby Koopa Troopa shell and toss it at the Star Coin to grab it.
Star Coin 2
Just before the Checkpoint Flag, hop onto the pink mushroom platform and let it rise all the way up into the sky. Once in the new room, the Star Coin is an easy jump and grab.
Star Coin 3
Pass the Red Ring to find two blue mushrooms. Stand on one to lower the mushroom, then jump and bounce off the Paratroopa as it passes the Star Coin to grab it and safely land on the other blue mushroom. You can also grab a Koopa Troopa shell from earlier and throw it at the Star Coin.
World 5-A
Star Coin 1
The first Star Coin be seen in plain sight. Use a Paratroopa as a boost or just run and jump to grab it.
Star Coin 2
As you are riding the golden boat, you should come across a spring. Grab it and hold on to it until you come across a Gold Ring on a high platform. Use the spring to to reach the Gold Ring and jump along the platforms to the second Star Coin. You can also bounce off a Paratroopa to reach it.
Star Coin 3
Near the end, use the spring, or a Paratroopa, to grab the last Star Coin in the sky.
World 5-5
Star Coin 1
As soon as you exit the red pipe at the start of the level, hop on top of the Bullet Bill launcher for the first Star Coin to appear. You jump boost off a Bullet Bill to get up there.
Star Coin 2
After the Checkpoint Flag, look for a green pipe surrounded by Bullet Bill launchers. Wait for one of the lower Bullet Bills to fire, then walk along the Snake Block to reach the pipe. Head inside, then make your way to the right in the new room. The Star Coin is at the end!
Star Coin 3
At the end of the level is a Star Coin floating near the bottom of the screen. Avoid the Banzai Bills and wait for a Bullet Bill to pass under the Star Coin for you to bounce off and grab the last Star Coin.
World 5-6
Star Coin 1
Make your way all the way down the cliff. Don’t take any of the paths that go right, and once you reach the outlined blocks go left. Hit the Exclamation Switch to open the platform below and fall into the second Star Coin. Run all the way to the right and find solid ground before the timer runs out!
Star Coin 2
After the Checkpoint Flag, move forward until you find the four platforms rotating on a spinner. Drop down below and enter the green warp pipe. Now underground, grab the spring and bring it onto the moving platform. Time your jump and spring upward into the Star Coin as you avoid either of the two Super Piranha Plants.
Star Coin 3
With everything still intact, head back up the cliff (or better yet, finish the level and start from the beginning). With a Fire Flower in hand, head down the cliff and defeat the second Super Piranha Plant. Throw tons of fireballs into the gray pipe to reveal a Mega Mushroom. Rampage through the rest of the level and be sure to destroy the blocks hiding the third Star Coin right before the flagpole.
World 5-Castle
Star Coin 1
After seeing the first Dry Piranha Plant, hit the hidden blocks above the visible Question Blocks. Use the blocks to gain access to the red pipe over on the right wall. Inside the pipe is the first Star Coin.
Star Coin 2
After the Checkpoint Flag, you will see the second Star Coin at the bottom just above the lava. Occasionally, a metal grate will pop out, giving you enough time to drop from the metal grate above and jump right back. You really gotta be quick with this one. The moment you drop, you should already be pressing up and grab the grate. Once you hear the Star Coin activate, jump back up!
Star Coin 3
While you are on the long metal grate, get past the two Dry Piranha Plants on the ceiling and flip it upward just before it touches the lava. This will give you the time needed to reach the Star Coin. Once you got it, jump up to the small grate.
