Sticker Star is divisive, to say the least. When it released on the Nintendo 3DS in 2012, it arrived as the fourth entry in the beloved Paper Mario series with a new battle system and a more streamlined playstyle. This wasn’t the first time the series mixed up the core gameplay, but the reliance on collectible stickers as battle attacks and the removal of core RPG elements like leveling up set up the sour reception the game would sadly be known for. The lack of diverse and original characters, uninspired worlds, and simple storylines has solidified Paper Mario: Sticker Star as an outlier in the series.
