Our Mario Kart: Double Dash!! unlockables guide details how to unlock every character and course, along with any other secrets and track shortcuts.
Mario Kart: Double Dash!! came out on the Nintendo GameCube back in 2023, and it was a banger! You got your usual round 16 different courses, but you also got a whopping 20 playable characters, more than double that of the previous game. As the title suggests, partners and doubles is the theme this time around, and you’ll notice it through new features like having two players in one kart, the ability to hold two items at once, and partners having unique items that only they can obtain. This particular Mario Kart hasn’t been re-released in over 20 years, but it’s bound to make its way to the Nintendo Switch Online service on the Nintendo Switch 2. Keep your eyes out for it!

Unlockable Characters
Mario Kart: Double Dash!! clocks in a total of 20 total characters, four of which must be unlocked. Luckily, character unlocks happen in pairs. That said, some of the requirements require multiple requirements, so you’ll need race through multiple cups to get them all.
- Toad and Toadette – Get first place in the 100cc Special Cup. You can unlock the Special Cup by getting first in the 100cc Star Cup.
- Petey Piranha and King Boo – A couple of steps here! Get first place in the 100cc Star Cup to unlock the Special Cup, then get first in the 150cc Special Cup to unlock the All Cup Tour. Set aside some time and play through and win the 150cc All Cup Tour to unlock Mirror Mode. Now get first place in the Star Cup in Mirror Mode to unlock your new characters!
List of Characters
There are 20 playable characters in Mario Kart: Double Dash!!, an appreciated increase from the eight characters in Mario Kart 64 and Mario Kart: Super Circuit. Each character pair has a unique item that only they can obtain while racing. If you use characters from separate pairs, you’ll have access to both special items!
Characters are broken down into three weight classes: light, medium, and heavy. Lightweights don’t have the best top speed but their ability to accelerate quickly after slowing down is noteworthy. Medium-weights are average in their stats. A little of everything! Heavyweights can push smaller characters around and have a high top speed, but their acceleration is on the lower end.
List of Cups and Courses
Like Mario Kart 64 before it, Mario Kart: Double Dash!! features a total of 16 courses. Four of them must be unlocked by getting access to the Special Cup, and they include Wario Colosseum, Dino Dino Jungle, Bowser’s Castle, and Rainbow Road. There are also two secret battle maps to unlock, and they include Luigi’s Mansion and Tilt-a-Kart.
- Special Cup – Get first the 100cc Star Cup.
- Luigi’s Mansion – Get first in the 150cc Mushroom Cup.
- Tilt-a-Kart – Get first place in the 100cc Star Cup to unlock the Special Cup, then get first in the 150cc Special Cup to unlock the All Cup Tour. Set aside some time and play through and win the 150cc All Cup Tour to unlock Mirror Mode. Now get first place in the Flower Cup in Mirror Mode.

- Green Fire – 50cc Mushroom Cup
- Bloom Coach – 50cc Flower Cup
- Para-Wing – 50cc Star Cup
- Rattle Buggy – 100cc Mushroom Cup
- Waluigi Racer – 100cc Flower Cup
- Toad Kart – 100cc Special Cup

Heavyweight characters will only be able to ride heavy karts, no matter who their partner is.
List of Karts
Karts are listed in order of characters as they appear on the character select screen. Karts are graded by their speed, acceleration, and weight, and each ranking is based out of 5.
