Mario Party 5 gives the series a big shake-up by ditching the item system and replacing it with the capsule system. Capsules can be used on players like normal items, but they can also be thrown on a space where landing on it will have the same effect. Seven new boards, three new playable characters, 77 minigames, and a number of new smaller modes make up the second installment on the Nintendo GameCube.

Capsules
This time items come in the form of capsules, free items you receive by passing a capsule machine. What’s not free is actually using the item on yourself. Not interested? You also have the option to throw the capsule on a blue space within 10 spaces of your location. Anyone that lands on the capsule occupied space will receive the effect whether it be good or bad.
