Well, since in Japan every Magikoopa is called a Kamek, perhaps Europe thought that this game's Kamek is the character Kamek, but USA thought that this was an average Magikoopa.
I'll let you know when I get the game tonight as to whether it's Kamek or Magikoopa. Probably the former since AUS follows EUR in translations (MK7 as an example)
Do you only need to play the Story Mode once to unlock both Kamek & Shy Guy, or is twice like MP8? I think it might be once, but I'm not entirely sure. I don't have the game, so I can't go on my Wii and check.

In North America, Kamek is known as Magikoopa in Mario Party 9.
^Yep, we've got that. I suspect that due to the inspecificity of the Japanese name and since NOAm base their translation currently on the NOJ version, they went with a less specific character name. (Funny though since siad Magikoopa is mounted on a broom)
I have a feeling my friend and I will be fighting over Toad, since Toadette is nowhere in the game this time. Too bad they couldn't at least make her a constellation.

Because they wanted to use less characters for this game and add some new ones in and they didn't find her important enough to bring back.
That's correct. Nintendo stated that they will be adding new characters and they did not have enough room to add Toadette in the end. They confirmed at least 12 characters (All 8 returning from Mario Party DS, 1 returning from Mario Party 8 (Birdo) and 3 newcomers (Koopa, Shy Guy and Kamek)). Pretty much. Since Toadette hasn't really been an important character so far (And i'm not counting the side games, mind you) i'd imagine she'd get nixed for room, letting other characters into the fray.★Plum★ said:

The most important role she has ever played was item explained in Paper Mario TTYD. All the other characters are from way in the past. Mario,Luigi,Peach,Toad, and Wario have all been playable characters and the first four being main of main characters. Yoshi, Birdo, Kamek, Koopa, and Shy-Guy are long time NCPs. Daisy was the princess to rescue in Mario for the GBC. Daisy and Waluigi are both known for being in spinoffs and both are the "opposite" version of another character. Caomparing that with Toadette who has only been in spin offs and never as an important character I can see why they didn't include her. Then with the other speculation characters like Boo and Rosalina are still more important and appear in the main games.
