If you need help, you can PM me with steps you don't understand. But be sure to test different things avail in GIMP first.

Err.. For the signatures.. all you did on the backgrounds are gradient tool use in different modes about fifty times. Sure it looks appealing in some cases.. others it looks boring. As the signature sees it, it's very boring. Also, you just pasted a render in the signature (No flow and no depth.). If you added some flow with the Lucario signature, it would look less boring. Also, for sprite signatures, I would use less space for them. As for your Dark Boo signature... eh, the render cannot do any flow.. the render is too bland. The text in the signatures are really distracting, hard to see, and take up half of the space in the signature. For your Dark Boo, since the background is black and white and the text is white, it's hard to read some of the text. Dark Boo stands out WAY too much in the signature. Same with the Lucario.
Likewise, I should suggest you to look up some tutorials. DeviantART, GIMPtalk, and a few other sites are loaded with them. I have a few tutorials I can link you, but they maybe a little advanced.

My usual way is just brushes, text, blurring, and knowledge on how to use a render and match colors.

Depends on what you want to achieve. Simplicity can be just as effective if DONE RIGHT.
