It also has to outlast a certain number of days. Those mini-tournaments that were held earlier, for example, didn't feel like much of an activity here, but rather just playing the game like how I do with VIP and Yoshi8984 in SSBB sometimes. A longer tournament, however, could easily out-last that and be worth something.
In short - it must be enjoyable, interactive, and long-lasting.
Sign-ups should be required as well.
