It belongs in Nintendo, not Sony. :p Anyway...

"Sony President Thinks 3DS is Just an Updated DS

Aside from the 3D, same old same old, apparently

It seems Sony executives still don't appear too wowed by Nintendo's 3DS, despite both sides acknowledging that different demographics are being targeted by each company's handheld system. Is this a lack of sportsmanship, or a genuine lack of excitement? Sony Computer Entertainment president Shuhei Yoshida sounds like he's in the second camp.

Yoshida spoke with Eurogamer and talked about the apparent lack of competition that its Next Generation Portable faces. "There's no one clear competitor in terms of what NGP offers," as he put it. Although the NGP and the 3DS are capable of running games and more, Yoshida rejected claims that both will be in direct competition with each other based on what each system provides:

... when we were designing the NGP we had no idea what Nintendo was going to do... Aside from the 3D stereoscopic display, they seem to be keeping the same theme that they had with the DS – it feels like an update of the DS to me... Lots of choices we made were so different from their choices. It's kind of hard to compare the two, aside from the fact that both of them are dedicated gaming platforms.

Yoshida did admit that both handhelds face a common enemy: the cheaper alternative that is mobile gaming.

We are dealing with the same issue that Nintendo is. It's up to content publishers, including ourselves, to show people that this is worth £25 or £30 as opposed to 59p... You cannot release the same content that you put on the iPhone for a dollar on to NGP or some other consoles and expect people to pay 20 times that."

I honestly disagree. The Nintendo 3DS is something way much more than just the Nintendo DS. The Nintendo 3DS has a lot more features and apps than the original DS did. It kind of sounds like Sony would want to try to make NGP outperform 3DS, so that gamers could lean to NGP than 3DS. I doubt that would happen. Besides, the NGP is still in development and won't be released until late 2011.

What do you think? Do you agree or disagree with the Sony President?

Nice to see he sees mobile gaming as a threat.

But in all honesty, Nintendo and Sony have their own niche markets. But in terms of 3DS being an update of the DS, at this stage NGP is looking much like an update, albeit MUCH larger, of the PSP.

(Then again, changing your formula completely doesn't always work. e.g. Virtual Boy. :p Tried and true is what Nintendo might be aiming at. And certainly both handhelds have far greater performance capability (GFX/speed mainly) than their predecessors.)

This is the quote I read:

"Compared to 3DS, it was very interesting – when we were designing the NGP we had no idea what Nintendo was going to do. Aside from the 3D stereoscopic display, they seem to be keeping the same theme that they had with the DS – it feels like an update of the DS to me. Lots of choices we made were so different from their choices. It's kind of hard to compare the two (3DS to NGP), aside from the fact that both of them are dedicated gaming platforms. And I did not get the impression that he was bashing Nintendo. He does say he feels like the 3DS is an update to the DS, but he does not say that the NGP isn't. He even goes on to say that they have a common competitor with the Apple's App Store and they both need to work on solving that problem. I hate when people read a headline and already start posting. Read the article/quote.

The handheld systems are usually always an update of the previous handheld. Just take a look at the GB, GBC and GBA.

Same could be said for home consoles.

But in this case, the NGP and 3DS are both an update on the PSP and DS, respectively.

Maybe not so much on the NGP, though...

The way the Sony president said it was a bit odd though. He claims that the 3DS is JUST an updated DS. I happen to disagree to the idea that it's JUST an update, because comparing from DS to 3DS and PSP to NGP, there's larger amounts of differences from DS to 3DS than ffrom PSP to NGP.

WHAT'S THAT? I CAN'T HEAR YOU OVER ALL OF THE DS'S SHOVEWARE
PSP has a lot of terrible games too =P

Every successful system gets shovelware
Go to your local GameStop and look at both sections and tell me which one has more shovelware per row.
DS has more games for it since it's been by far the more successful system.

More games≠better system

The Xbox 360 has more games, but that doesn't make it better than the PS3.

Where in my statement does it even come close to say that more games = better system. I never said any system was better than any other.

I said the DS is far more successful which is a fact. Are you still doing this Sony fanboy stuff? Sigh..

Probably 1 out of 3 of my friends know what a PSP is and can even name a single game from it.

I only got 2 games for it. BBS (which was horrible) and Civiballs (just a downloadable game, which actually is very addicting).

Most of them have a DS and have a wide assortment of games.

Now, if I move to another community and take a survey, it may change, but the DS has had a better audience reaction to it. Barely anybody talks about the PSP these days. It was fun for like the year after it launched, but without some strong games to hold it up, it fell behind the DS.
