RPG Maker VX or XP

I'm in the video game club at school and I think this would work well but I'm not sure.

Has anybody used this before? Is it easy? Does it have viruses? Which of the two is better?

I've seen some videos of this and it looks fun and generally easy to use. The only thing I'd have to learn is programing the story and designing original characters and story. I'd appreciate some answers.

Alright, I have minor experience in XP and moderate in VX so I can help with the technical aspect (can;t help about viruses, especially with the online distribution of cracks - use at own discretion)

It's easy enough to use for beginners, but can be powerful enough for professionals to use it (through scripts and the RGSS language of which I'm not familiar with).

There are three main components in RPG Maker (both the same in VX and XP): the Map Editor, the Event Editor and the Database. You use the Map Editor to create the world, and place Events that progress your game. The Event Editor is a simple interface that allows you to linearly create what happens and how your characters interact in the world. The Database stores all the info for Heroes, Classes, Items, Specials, Enemies and more.

Graphically, the general community seems to like the Run Time Package for VX more, but the Map design is almost certainly better in XP. Event wise, much the same, and the database options for parameters is a bit more expansive in XP. I use VX mainly because of the nostalgic battle style. (My on/off project The Rainbow Crusade is on this platform).

VX is also designed for XP/Vista, while XP was designed only for XP (though might still work on Vista). Be careful if you have Windows 7 though... >_>

My advice is to go for XP personally, because of its more comic-styled artwork and more expansive features compared with VX's anime inspiration, but it's ultimately your call.

@Yoshi15: I think you need to pay...?

Gameplay design: you can practise by using the predeveloped Database. All you need to do is create some events and maps - it's a simple process but not necessarily linear design wise. If anything, be wary of switches and variables (accessible when editing events) - these drive gameplay forward. Controls are predefined (check the Help file)

...if you want me to send something as an example (RMVX), PM or email me. But don't forget to install the RTP packages (I use both, compiled into my VX folder)

I'll have to give this a try one day. Sounds very interesting. I'd also love to try this thing of yours H-J. "The Rainbow Crusade". If you ever plan on finishing it that is.
