Captain Olimar from the Pikmin series could be a reference to the Mario series, along with his ever-faithful sidekick, Louie. See, Olimar's name in Japanese is "Orima" (I believe, it's something of the sort at least) which, if you couldn't tell is an anagram of Mario. Olimar is ALMOST an anagram of Mario, but with an L. To further prove this statement, originally, in one of the Mario RPG games, Olimar was supposed to visit the Starbean cafe to taste your coffee. He would then dub Mario, "Marlio," doing the reverse of turning Olimar into Mario. Louie is actually a reference to Luigi, as the beginning of Luigi's name is pronounced "Loo-EE."

Pikmin's earliest form was a GameCube Tech Demo called "Mario 128" showing the Gamecube's power to have multiple AI units, as seen with 128 moving Marios. They could pick up things and do several actions similar to the Pikmin, and eventually after several forms, it evolved into the Pikmin series. Olimar and Louie were named in honor of Pikmin's Mario Roots.

Continuing the topic's self-proclaimed New Super Mario Bros. Week in honor of the U.S. retail release of New Super Luigi U, here's Fact #2 about, well, New Super Mario Bros. 2. Enjoy!: A working title for New Super Mario Bros. 2 was "New Super Mario Bros. Chicken Power-ups were once considered for use in New Super Mario Bros. Wii, but it was replaced by the Penguin Transformation, which I think is cooler looking anyway (Especially Luigi because his color scheme makes him look kind of like a ninja); oddly enough, only Mario, Blue Toad, and Yellow Toad are shown with it in the concept art.
