PC Gaming (and Steam)

So Steam is allowed mod creators to charge for their mods. They're also taking a 3/4ths cut from every purchase. I honestly don't care that you have to pay for some mods now, just means I won't be installing them. Taking a majority cut of that price is pretty scummy.

One of the reasons I don't bag on Origin is because of s*** like this.

Undeniable proof that Valve is scum.

Also, friend said that it goes like this: "25% mod develeper, 30% valve, 45% game developer". Not sure if correct. That's less scummy, but still sh**.

There was a pic on Reddit of a horse genitals mod for 100$, not sure if it was real. Just... not even anything else. I guess you can crouch down and stare at your horse's manhood now. Worth every penny.

I think the whole pay for mods thing is pretty stupid. I didn't play with mods a whole lot really since I'm weird and am fine with playing most games vanilla, but with this I'll certainly be using even less mods now.

People who love the game and want to add to it will pour their hearts into a free mod.
People who want to make money will try to make a paid mod with as little content as possible.

And the fact that Valve / Game Devs get 75% of the money will make it even less appealing. An author who made a giant story add-on will not only be limiting his audience, but also getting a mere quarter of what he's selling it for. Asking for donations is probably far more effective.

All the more reason to go to Nexus for mods rather than through the Steam workshop.

Funny how a lot of Valve games (Counter Strike, Team Fortress, DOTA, etc.) all started out as mods of other games. Pretty sure none of these concepts would've been fully realized if they were behind a paywall years ago.

Well, yeah, but those mods were almost entirely new games. Doubt Skyrim has many total conversion mods... I don't know of any New Vegas total conversion mods, and IIRC they're the same engine. From what little I've seen, mods for Skyrim seem to be mostly new npcs / new quests / new items.

Also, IIRC the reason Killing Floor went from free mod to paid game was because the community was dying out. And now it's the game pretty much everybody has.

True, but the intention is to expand to other games. I don't think a game like DayZ would've caught on (and then fell off entirely) if you had to buy Arma 2, the expansion and the mod itself.

Not really a win for the community IMO. Seems like a bunch of people got angry about a non-problem and ruined everything for everybody. Granted, devs only getting 25% was stupid as hell, but that could be fixed.

A fairer system would have actually worked well. Let's say, 75% for the developer. The people who are working on mods right NOW do it for free and there's no reason to believe they would all simultaneously decide to switch to paid mods. Most would probably continue making free mods. The prospect of paid mods, however, invites people who don't want to spend a ton of time for no real reward to add to the game. And, granted, this would mean there would be a lot of junk mods that are obviously just money grabbers, but there'll also be some -good- mods that are worth the one or two dollars you pay for them.

The whole protest -reeks- of entitlement. It's not like you somehow -deserve- free content. What this was was the community basically saying 'you don't have the right to make us pay for your work.' It's not like a mod is some quick thing you put together in a few hours. It's a lot of work, and as modding is now, it's essentially sacrificing a whole lot of time just to make the game better with very little, if any, reward. Perhaps some gratitude and a bit of popularity. If you have a donate button, maybe you'll make a few dozen bucks or something.

i was more upset that valve was sticking their piggy bank in something that they had no part in.

i don't think it was a non-problem considering this got a ton of backlash from literally everyone, people don't like change and this was valve trying to change something that's always been in place. you honestly can't try to change something like that in a day and expect people to be okay with it, and that goes beyond gaming. i think it would've gone over a lot smoother if they had proposed the idea rather than just implementing it. maybe it is entitlement from the community but valve shouldn't have been so forward with their idea.

personally i think they should've implemented a donation option and kept their hands out of it.
