Hideo Kojima has officially announced Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes, the next instalment in the critically-acclaimed stealth-action franchise, at a special 25th anniversary event in Japan today.

The game was shown off running on Kojima-san’s new Fox Engine, with Twitter chatter coming out of the event claiming parts of the demo were shown in real-time, which managed to leave many jaws well and truly floored.

According to reports, Ground Zeroes was running on current-gen PC hardware, and culminated in the main protagonist being airlifted to safety via chopper as Ride of the Valkyries played on. Perhaps most interesting however, is the fact it's an open-world title.
This was actually revealed a couple of days ago, and it's another game in the MGS franchise. It's the very first MGS game to truly be open-world and is set some time after Peace Walker.

Here's some gameplay footage that was showed at PAX (though there's barely any gameplay =P):

I'm excited for this game. I was very impressed with how Peace Walker turned out, so I can only expect this game to add more on to this great series. They haven't revealed a release date yet, but it seems that it might be released later this year, due to it being having the 25th Anniversary logo on the box. But yeah, I'm pretty hyped about this game.

What do you MGS fans think?

That conference was pretty good, worth the 1.5 hours.

It sucks that Kojima didn't bring back Hayter (it's gonna be so much different). It's a crushing blow to not have him voice Big Boss, but that's not gonna keep me from pre-ordering the game and enjoying it like all the other MGS games in the series.
