Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash

Wow. Strange that Boo was revealed before Yoshi, and Waluigi before Wario. But I'm still confident that they (along with DK, Diddy, and Jr.) will make it, as they all made it to Mario Tennis Open. I'm just really hoping for the return of Paratroopa, Shy Guy, and Petey Piranha. After all, Shy Guy was one of the few mainstays to make it to Mario Kart 8, and Camelot returned Paratroopa in Mario Golf: World Tour. And who knows, maybe Birdo will make it back after all these years (like Toad).

We got a new trailer!! Yaaaaay! I am intrigued to know who the 4 unlockable characters are...

Bowser Jr for sure :p
Thoughts on this trailer:
Love the special effects and animation the trailer has.

Online play is good.

I like the different character poses. (especially Daisy's and Rosalina's.)

I wonder who the four other characters are.

Please don't tell me the only courts in the game are going to be inside that stadium.

The "variety of modes" look OK.

Although it was expected, it's nice to see Rosalina confirmed. And with a new outfit.

The amiibo feature is OK.

At the very end when it shows Mario, Luigi, Peach Daisy, and Rosalina, I'm surprised Rosie is so popular she's basically become a main character in the Mario series.

Toadette, Bowser Jr., Dry Bowser and, the Sprixie Princess?
What about Koopa Troopa or Shy Guy
Or Petey Piranha, or Diddy Kong?!
Toadette/Bowser Jr. I think we can all agree with for being playable.
Dry Bowser... Well, I'm okay with that. Dry Bowser has proven time and time again to be interesting, even though he's technically a costume for Bowser in many ways... The prixie Princesses I completely disagree with though. It's far too soon for a main role like this, especially when considering the characters that could have gone in instead.

Koopa, Shy Guy, and Petey Piranha, not so much, but they could still get in I'd think.
Diddy not being in is blasphemous. If anything, he should replace the Sprixie Princesses. :p

Also as a small thing I noticed in the video - I can't imagine Rosalina just being labeled as a "Power" character like she is here. Not like this, I mean.

TOADETTE CONFIRMED YAY!!!

(Still a shame there is no Shy Guy or Dry Bones...  :( And anyway, Sprixie Princess is still an original idea at least for me  :p )

I actually love the roster!! Sprixie Princess is a welcome addition... someone NO ONE WAS EXPECTING AT ALL! I still wish they would have went with 24 characters though, since it IS the Wii U!! I would have added Birdo, Diddy Kong, Luma, Petey Piranha, Shy Guy and newcomers Nabbit and Magikoopa! But I got Rosalina and Toadette so I am happy I guess :p

No offence to Toadette, but that gif is ugly.
Well to be fair we're just looking at a silhouette and making an assumption. Mostly because who else could those be after all? :p
(I mean there could be more characters than this - you've seen how Nintendo's adjusted these things before... I hope).

On other things I wana give my overall impressions on this so far because of how I've been thinking about this.
I just wonder... why did they decide to go this path? From Mario Power Tennis to Open, I mean? Because seeing as things are, the Chance shots are here to stay, which is honestly my least favorite part of the 3DS one (which I am honestly glad they made it optional this time around), but why havn't they brought anything back from Power Tennis? Where's those Power Shots I loved from those games?
Power Shots honestly required more skill to utilize than the Chance shots and can't be abused over and over and over again like the Chance shots could, and the effects and range of each Power Shot was unique to the character, for example, Mario, Bowser, and DK use a massively powerful hit to set the ball on fire and end the opponent who hit it to the other side, or even those ones that slowed down the player upon hitting it, and if you saved it instead of using it, you could use it to help save one of your own shots instead! It's the strategy of when to use these shots that made them so much fun to have, but instead we got these random chance shots that once again appear at random to give you a boost, and once again can be spammed all over by the one side who gets it.

Now the courts? Gotta admit that these ones are already looking more bland than ever. I guess keeping everything inside a singular stadium will have save some space on the disk for more things though, right (And I suppose it also works for those banners-crowd things that the audience does at the sides)? While that one might be bland in how it looks... the courses themselves seem to be taking their style based upon Tennis Open again. Meaning instead of...well, themed locations, you've got one big stadium that changes it's flooring to change the ball's bounce speed and height. Yeah... that's boring.

However, I do admit seeing the one split one and the ice one do make me wonder if gimmick courts (er... well, not technically gimmick "courts" as it's only 1 court) will be back with 1 that changes like Rosalina's from Tennis Open (aka the 1 gimmick court), and the ice one, which may just be a court from Tennis Open, though I'm actually hoping for a court with ice physics just to spice things up for once. That would be kinda cool to see. Just bringing gimmick courts back would be awesome (those in particular, Wario Factory (though not as fast as the conveys got there) and Bowser's Castle Court would be really fun choices to put in, even though I doubt the later for it's gimmick).

Also that new mega mushroom? I think it looks like a cool item. Do note I'm saying "Item" because there was once a mode created in Power Tennis and N64 that used item boxes to give items to player. If they implemented that as an item I think it would be a perfect fit into it. Also I love how the Toads throw the Mega Mushrooms so you have a choice of when to grab it or not, considering if you've got the chance to I mean. I think they shoulda done that with the item matches initially... where once you get an item, it appears behind you, and you have to run into it to get the power. Dang, I think I should work for Nintendo I have such great ideas. Also - they should remove the chance shots too (or just enable the option to use Power Shots) - another great idea. :p

Also, like in GameXplain's personal preview of the game... where's everything else? Surely if what I stated before is true (keeping everything inside a singular stadium to save on disk data) and they're not just doing it to simply save money on lazy designs, there's gotta be something more, right?
The big ball rally looks boring imo - it's just a rally. And why are there chance shots if you're playing co-operatively? I don't understand.
Amiibo seem to be finally making a 3rd big purpose here - and work just like in smash where you level them up. Not exactly the kind of game I'd think they'd do that, but at least they FINALLY ALLOWED A CO-OP OPTION ONLINE WITH YOUR AMIIBO (something they should have done with Smash a long time ago...). I kinda hope smash implements this feature tbh - it's a really smart option.

Apart from those two things... nothing else has been announced. I guess Nintendo doesn't give a crap about the smaller parts of the game? I know I loved the minigames and Ring Shot modes from Power Tennis - why not try bringing some of those back for a change of pace? I mean, Tennis Open had it's few minigames (some bland as they were tbh, and didn't provide any replayability, though excluding the Luma Rally one, which was like the Gooper Blooper one from Power Tennis anyhow) so what will this game have? Hopefully it'll be something at least worth doing. Or hopefully even wild. :p
Guess we'll have to wait until November to see what else there will be, because there just HAS to be before release...

It will probably work well in this game, but that would be very OP in Sm4sh. Level 50 amiibos are ridiculously good.

Concerning the lack of content, it may seem like there isn't much currently, but I'd bet money that some more stuff (mini-games or a story mode) are announced in the coming weeks. No need for concern imo.

Story Mode?
It's a tennis game man.
That's not happening.

Challenges, or mini-games I'd expect in, but not a story mode.

It seems as though with every game installment, the series loses replay value. This isn't exclusive to the tennis series either. When they're focusing all of their efforts on making beautiful HD characters and courts and spend their time implementing complicated features such as online, they need to cut corners somewhere (general content/ total number of characters). Having said that, if I need to pay twice the amount for a game that feels complete I would happily do that. I can't say the same for anyone else, though. The trouble is they spend all their time creating the game engine from scratch that when the time comes for adding new stuff, they're already almost out of time and resource and it's such a shame. The reason Mario Parties 2/3/5/6/7 had so much content for example was because they re-used a game engine they already created and thus could delegate their time and energy on creating new content.

That aside, one small feature I would like implemented is an option for one person to be permanently in mega mode while the other is in small mode. I know from past experiences when I invite a casual friend to play, end up thrashing them, they don't want to play again. If they're mega all the time, it would be a near-perfect solution to ensure a fair match between experienced and non-experiences players.

Also if the comet observatory with the beautiful unique background somehow returned in glorious HD, that would just make my life complete. I don't expect it to happen though, unfortunately. I also miss the Bowser court from the N64 with the unique items gimmick. Together they would keep me hooked for weeks.

But unfortunately this game has been rushed so I don't expect anything except similar looking courts with different flooring, and a limited online/ single player. Up to 6 DLC characters is still a possibility, though.
