Only since the announcement of A Link Between Worlds, have I become actively interested in The Legend of Zelda series, which I rendered too mature (As some of the ESRB ratings literally suggest) and confusing in the past, but now with universal acclaim, beautiful stories and music, the announcement of a new game, Reggie's proclaim that A Link to the Past is his favorite game of all time, and just the fact that I, too, have grown up, along with adapting a more complex view of the world; being some who's able to understand and tolerate darker themes. So the question is, which Zelda game is the best for those entering Hyrule for the first time (There are a few obvious serious canidates, but I had to give every canon title some love.), and if you decide, please tell us newbies why.
I'll probably just get impatient and snag A Link Between Worlds first anyway.
I'll have to admit though, I did play a little of Ocarina of Time after watching my older brother and reading from the guide for him, but my sole motive was to reach Hyrule Castle just so I could see the Mario portraits whenever I wanted. He always tells me I shouldn't play because "My delicate, young, feminine soul is too fragile for any Water Temples and Ocarina of Time was the worst game ever." (As someone given temperately infinite wisdom via the guide, I have no idea what he's talking about.) but I always tell everyone who says that, "I'll just get the remake and prove you wrong!"

I'd personally recommend A Link to the Past myself as it's pretty good with it's worlds and A Link Between Worlds is a sequel to it.

I started out with The Legend of Zelda Collectors Edition for Nintendo GameCube when I was little, it contained The first game, Zelda II, Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask, and a Wind Waker Demo. It's a neat little disc.
