I use quick reply so I usually type them out. Even if I do use reply I end up typing them out, because it's honestly easier to just continue typing rather than stop to move the mouse and click it.

I usually click on the smiley, but when I'm too lazy to move the mouse, I'll just type in the characters...if I remember what they are. =P
