Fun fact: The name "amiibo" comes from a Japanese expression for well-meaning friendship. I'd also like to point out that a variety of languages also use the "ami(i)" prefix to mean friend, as in amigo (Spanish) and ami(e) (French) So, you can think of an amiibo as a little "buddy." ;)
That totally makes sense seeing as how the amiibo's work in Smash Bros.
Perhaps in later games they also will work both-ways in they'll also act as another player as well.

...we'll have to see in time though. :p

So can anyone else think of good uses for amiibo? All I can think of is a CPU fighter like Smash Bros., content unlocks like Mario Kart, maybe a digital passport for moving game stats from one console to another, and storage, for example, a small Pokemon Box in each amiibo.

Super Mario amiibo figures are confirmed! They will launch on Friday, March 20, 2015 in Europe and North America. The figures are compatible with Mario Party 10 and they are: Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach, Yoshi, Bowser, and Toad.

Toad will be compatible with Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker.

More Super Smash Bros. figures are confirmed. You will be able to find Wario, Ness, Charizard, Lucina, Robin, and Pac-Man in April 2015. Wario, Rosalina, Donkey Kong, and Bowser figures will also be compatible with Mario Party 10.
