So today something just hit me about the 3DS and the name of it. I always thought 3DS was supposed to highlight it has 3D capabilities until I realized the 3DS is the third DS (DS, DSi, 3DS). Do you guys think Nintendo called it the 3DS because of the 3D, because its the third DS or maybe a combination of both?

Kind of an odd thread...
Regardless, it's for the 3D, because there was the DS Lite, so it's not third.

I wouldn't really consider that they did it for the third DS. They called the 3DS because the 3D was the main aspect of the system.

Just as Zweilous said, it's for the 3D. The third DS wouldn't make sense as they've had many versions: DS, DS Lite, DSi, and DSi XL. Also, it wouldn't make sense since they made the 3DS XL, which would be the sixth version.
Oh fair enough. And by third I meant third Main DS. Not different sized DS's. It just hit me last night and I wanted to know what you guys would think.
The DS and the 3DS are the same as the Wii and the Wii U. The 3DS is not an upgrade, it's the next handheld system for Nintendo. The DS, DS Lite, DSi, and DSi XL are all part of the same handheld, just different versions/generations.
So the 3 in 3DS is definitely about the 3D.

I think it's both.
Sort of the 3rd DS and the "3D" abilities it has made the name perfect.
