We're back, and now available direct from the forums! That's right, another issue of MPL Newsletter has come back from the dead!
We are a little smaller content-wise than before, but we'll endeavor to get you a new issue every month or two to compensate.
With that, let's get this issue started! ;p
Generic Grasslands
No questions? What questions? Who peeved him off? Until when? And why is there a G in the banner? When SuperZambezi logged on on May 30th he confused everyone. A long discussion took place in the shoutbox as everyone tried to solve the mystery. The G in the banner provoked members to check the url of the new banner, which had a mysterious "INPUTGRASS" ln it. SZ tried to drop hints for everyone but no one could figure out how to input this grass. Finally, it was revealed that you had to input the grass into a secret page url of the forum. From there it was on.
It became clear that everyone was going to have to solve the riddles to unravel the true meaning of this madness. But for what? Many people were expecting this to hype up another Glacier Summer or Conquering Kingdom-like event. But everyone solved the riddles regardless of the outcome. But the outcome was not exactly what anyone was expecting. It was a website. Not a website to have Glacier Summer 2. A website separate from the Mario Party Legacy site.
The mystery G was actually the first letter of this new site, Generic Grasslands. Having nothing to do with Mario Party, GG is SZ's new website will be about many gaming topics. He's working on having many videos, game reviews, game editorials, and more on the site. SZ claims he has decided that he wants to venture into journalism and this website will help him gain experience, whether the site is successful or not. So what else? Well, Cook caught up with SZ for a quick word.
Cook - Why did you name the site Generic Grasslands?
SZ - At first glance, you see a name like Generic Grasslands and quickly question the name. Why pick a bland name like that? What do grasslands have to do with anything, let alone generic ones. As the site was coming to fruition, the idea of having daily features, where opinions and criticism alike come out, was going to be a main feature. Being a site targeted towards Nintendo fanboys that play other non Nintendo games, the Mario series has a special spot in all of our hearts. We all have personal gripes with our favorite series, and mine was the fact that every Mario game always had the first level situated in some sort of grassy area. Very generic, and very boring. This isn't an exclusive issue for the Mario series, but many, many other games, and not just Nintendo games. Thus Generic Grasslands was born.
Cook - Do you see yourself working on the Monday-Friday schedule 4 months from now?
SZ - The Monday-Friday update system is a unique one. Instead of the "whenever I feel like" update, or when a good article pops in my head, this requires me to tap into my creative side and pull out an article worth reading. There are plenty of topics to cover, it all depends on me. It will definetly be a challenge, but I am ready to take it on.
Cook - I also got to ask MLYW about what he thought about where the site would be in 4 months:
MLYW - Generic Grasslands has a lot of potential of becoming a successful site and I'm sure SuperZambezi has the determination to make the site flourish. Of course just like how Mario Party Legacy started, I can't see it going too far 4 months besides having that nice 4-team staff SuperZambezi is focusing on which, of course, brings more articles and readers to the site.
So where does this site go in 4 months? Does it flatten out, grow slowly, or grow rapidly and get its own domain? Stay tuned!
Nintendo at E3 2011 and Mario Party 9 Announced
It had already been one of Nintendo’s strongest showings in years. A majestic orchestral prelude. Ample publicity of the 3DS and its lineup – featuring more footage of Kid Icarus Uprising, Mario Kart 3DS, and other Mario titles. The unveiling of Wii U. Massive third party backing. E3 2011 delighted the Nintendo stronghold and demonstrated that the company still has the goods, for casual and hardcore gamers alike.
But there was one more surprise that no-one at MPL was prepared for. As Reggie Fils-Aime departed the stage and left a display of Nintendo’s upcoming titles for the year, there was one unmistakable logo that made four years’ hopeful waiting worth it.
Mario Party 9 had been announced.
In the words of SuperZambezi, administrator of Mario Party Legacy Network, the date of June 7, 2011 would be “the day he had been waiting for ever since he started the site”. Almost immediately, the forum became abuzz with hype over the announcement, and very soon trailers, screenshots and speculation commenced in the newly formed Mario Party 9 board.
While it’s known that it will be released on the Wii later this year, 2011, there is plenty that isn’t confirmed. Who made the playable roster? Why is the board system so different, and what’s with that four passenger vehicle? Where are coins and stars? What’s Bowser Jr’s role?
Will the series see a second wind? Or will it crash and burn? Only time, further news, and eventually release info will reveal the destiny of the Mario Party flagship.
Social Networking and Video Streaming
Members at MPL have been keeping activity up through a multitude of online media. The network itself now has a dedicated Twitter feed (http://goo.gl/4APWM) and a Facebook Page (http://goo.gl/Elz6g), while members have been keeping active through video streams and uploads.
In particular, there are Mario Party videos provided by Cookieboy17, Staryu and SuperZambezi, as well as a guest affiliation by YouTube user MadameWario. These are available on the main site (http://goo.gl/h4hPI). Let’s Plays are also being made by DKH and Ryou, and they are viewable from their respective blogs.
Events and Other Activities
The forums are always buzzing with activity, and 2011 is no exception. The 1000 Member milestone was achieved on February 27, 2011 and was celebrated with a new board filled with memories of the past three years. The Competitive Parties was initiated, although it is currently in limbo. The members had a pseudo all-nighter on both June 3 and June 4, 2011 (though not for Australians, who had easy afternoons online). MattC13 managed to kick off an MPL Music Tourney, which pits 64 artists against each other in head-to-heads for the ultimate title of top artist; he is also ready to get the second Best Member Tournament underway. Finally, the Activities board has been as busy as ever, and there is a section entirely devoted to it in this issue.
Forum Upgrade to SMF 2.0 RC5
While SuperZambezi had forewarned members, it was still somewhat of a shock in the afternoon of June 5, 2011 when the forum index was suddenly stripped bare of its familiar shoutbox and many of the menu buttons. In a decision to attempt what he had failed earlier to complete, SuperZambezi successfully upgraded SMF, the forum client, to version 2.0 Release Candidate 5. Many found familiar options, like the Ultimate Profile, Spoiler Tags and the newly restored Arcade, gone from sight; luckily, the ever-alert staff immediately set to work and within the next few days restored the forum to most of its former glory. While we’re still debating over whether AJAXChat should remain as shoutbox in addition to being chat, the MPL team is glad to report that we’re back and better than ever.
Mostly.
P.S. Recently, the Simple Machines team released the final version of SMF 2.0. Is it time for another pointless upgrade, which might fix the current errors of non-appearing warning messages, or will everything be left until the coast is clear?
Activities abound at MPL, and the Activities Central has been more active as of late. Here's a quick summary of what's currently in the works:
Staryu has continued running Mario Party Interactive, a game that takes gameplay on Mario Party boards (like MPI6 had Toad's Midway Madness from Mario Party 4) but with some new things like new items, for an example. Dark Boo has also been running Mario Party Forum Style (Mario Party with original boards made from scratch by him, etc.) and it has spun many sequels. Like in MPI, Boo has introduced many spins and awesome add-ons to make MPFS a great game. Staryu and Dark Boo have just finished Mario Party Interactive 6 and Mario Party Forum Style 6, 7, and 8 respectively, and the newest games, MPI7 and MPFS9 and 10, are now running. Here's a quick peek at some of the new designs/features in these new games:
EpicWaluigi has continued running "The Games of Chance", a game where your goal is to win the most coins at the end, you earn these coins by playing the games Waluigi has posted each week. Topper1 created this game, ever since the 2nd one, Waluigi has taken it over and tried his best to steer it in the right direction.
It's still very much in its infancy, but there's still MLYW and HJ's TCG project. Recent inactivity has slowed production of all Series One and Two cards, but that's not to say we can't show you some stuff that's already out:

Super Smash Bros. MPL
Staryu plans on making a "SSBMPL" someday, which is basically a Super Smash Bros. game with members here. He's mainly just thinking about ideas now, so it's in a VERY early stage, but it's going to include certain people from MPL and stuff. Nothing is exactly certain now, but he hopes it goes well. Here's some styles for Staryu, who not surprisingly is represented as Staryu:
What has been confirmed is a roster of 41 characters, and the prevalence of groups (e.g. Love and Beauty, and Mario Party Forum as examples) that have story mode significance. Still in discussion are stages, actual plot and of course character movesets. We shouldn't forget character design either. Keep checking Staryu's blog for more updates on this ambitious task.
Staryu: Welcome to the newsletter! Here we're at the interviewing section, and with me now, I have Justin5267! So Justin, let's get started. How'd you find MPL?
Justin: Google, then I went here because I realized there were at lot of people from Manly Party Forum, which had died.
Staryu: Do you miss MPF? If so, why?
Justin: Not really, it was filled with a lot of perverts.
Staryu: Well, moving on. Tell us a little about yourself! Like what are your interests/hobbies?
Justin: Well, I like Sonic the Hedgehog video games if you didn't notice yet. :
I really play video games mostly in my free time. I like to play American Football, I play as a linemen. Also I like to go to the weight room and lift weights off season.
Staryu: What's your personality?
Justin: Well I'm usually a care free person. I don't hate anybody (not even Snowy!)
Although I can be rather quiet and shy too.
Staryu: Why do you like Sonic? From what i've seen, you seem to be a big Sonic fan.
Justin: Well when I was a kid I went to a friends house and he was playing Sonic Adventure 2 Battle for the Gamecube. I wanted that so I asked for it on my birthday. Well my mom was silly and instead got me Sonic Mega Collection, a compilation of all of the original Genesis titles. So I kind of started with the old-school games. That game was fun, and I still have it. Soon I started to get more of the Sonic games, and now I just really enjoy playing the games. The speed of him is really fast, and was nothing compared to the way you played Mario.
Staryu: Sonic is one of my favorites as well.
Let's get to the Mario Party questions! Are you interested in the next Mario Party; Mario Party 9?
Justin: Hah! Knew I wasn't the only one!
On Mario Party 9, I'm not like really excited for it, but I'll probably end up buying it.
Staryu: What do you think they should do for Mario Party 9 to make it a better game than the others?
Justin: Not have all the boards be different. I prefer the "classic" way of playing Mario Party. Although some of the new board ideas are fun, there should be more than just one board with the "classic" gameplay. Also I just thought of this, have better extra modes like in Mario Party 5. Those were fun such as volleyball and the battle karts thing.
Staryu: Great thinking, Justin! Which Mario Party is your favorite?
Justin: Either Mario Party 2 for the cool outfits the characters get or Mario Party 5 for it's extra modes and fun minigames.
Staryu: Alright, I'm going to pull a really "unique" question now. What would you do if Sonic was in the Mario Party series?
Justin: That's as bad as an idea as putting pac-man and tomegatchi in Mario Kart.....
Staryu: What's your favorite Mario Party board ever?
Justin: Sweet Dream from Mario Party 5 because it's made out of candy and other goodies.
Staryu: Well, that's all the time we have! Thanks for letting me interview you, Justin! Did you enjoy the interview, haha?
Justin: NO I HATED. Not really it was alright, I guess I enjoyed it.
Staryu: Thank you all for reading! See ya next time when we interview the next person!
Justin: Google, then I went here because I realized there were at lot of people from Manly Party Forum, which had died.
Staryu: Do you miss MPF? If so, why?
Justin: Not really, it was filled with a lot of perverts.

Justin: Hah! Knew I wasn't the only one!

FLEET FOXES - Helplessness Blues
If anyone can guide this genre into the future, it’s Fleet Foxes. In all honestly, the records from CAKE, The Decemberists, Radiohead and The Strokes have all been let downs, especially The Stroke’s ‘Angles’, thanks to the massive hype. ‘Helplessness Blues’ is one the first album’s this year to be better than it’s processor, that being the 2008 self-titled album.
Overall, this album is composed well, and just great to listen to. Robin Pecknold’s powerful vocals fit well with the upbeat music on every song. The impressive title track shows the powerful nature of folk songs, starting out with a single acoustic guitar, heading into an explosion of instruments. The brilliant closer, ‘Grown Ocean’ also uses that intensity, all riding that same upbeat rhythm.
Overall Score - 9.0
