Super Smash Bros. Ultimate features three main methods of unlocking characters while other unlockables feature single requirements.
Unlockable Characters in Ultimate
Every unlockable character in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, including their fighter number, roster image, and how to unlock. The initial roster of characters will consist of the original eight characters featured in Super Smash Bros. for the Nintendo 64. There are three main methods to unlocking characters.
- Playing VS Matches and Game Time
- Classic Mode
- World of Light
Similar to past Smash games, playing normal matches will net you new characters. Instead of a set amount of matches, character challenges will unlock around every ten minute intervals provided you play at least one match in that time. The order in which you unlock characters is not random. Unless a character is unlocked using one of the two other methods, the order is always the same.
If you fail to defeat a challenger during their encounter battle, you can always head over to the Challenger’s Approaching menu option to fight them again. The first eight characters in the list are available form the start.
