Tall, Tall Mountain Stars – Super Mario 64 Walkthrough

Our Tall, Tall Mountain stars guide is part of our Super Mario 64 walkthrough and features all seven Power Stars and their locations.

Super Mario 64 Walkthrough and Stars Guide

Like every world in our Super Mario 64 walkthrough, Tall, Tall Mountain has a total of seven stars to collect. Six are obtained through the level stages while the final star is earned once you collect 100 coins in a single run. Jump to each of the Tall, Tall Mountain stars with the links below!

Star 1 – Scale the Mountain

Pass the waterfall and long jump across the two gaps. Ignore the mushrooms on the left and continue following the path around the mountain. Cross the log bridge and stand on the left side of the log to get it to turn, jumping at the last second to regain your footing. Dodge the erratic iron balls and slide down the short slippery slope. Long jump across the gap in front of the waterfall, then pass the area with the vines on the ground. Carefully walk across the narrow path above the waterfall, then run up to the star at the top of the mountain.

There’s also a shortcut at the very start of the level. Turn around and run towards the 1UP in the corner. Jump past it into the open air and a gust of wind will push you up to the area just before the rolling log.

Star 2 – Mystery of the Monkey Cage

Return to the very top of the mountain. There you’ll find Ukkiki the monkey. Grab him and agree to his offer. The caged star in front of the waterfall will then drop. Jump off the cliff and into the water, then grab the star at the bottom of the waterfall.

Star 3 – Scary ‘Shrooms, Red Coins

Collect all eight red coins and a star will appear. Half the red coins can be found on the mushrooms not far from the start of the level. This requires precise jumping so make sure to get these four first. The other half is on the wall with vines and Monty Moles. This area is just after the mushrooms. The star will appear over the giant mushroom near the vines area. Do a long jump and or a well timed normal jump to get there.

Star 4 – Mysterious Mountainside

Head back up the mountain and get to the area where you have to long jump to get across the gap in front of the waterfall. Walk around the corner and take note of the line of coins. Jump into the wall next to the coins to find a secret slide. There’s a split in this slide you have to be aware off. A wooden path will branch off to the right. Take this path! Continuing down light colored path will drop you into the abyss. Also be aware, the slide will twist and revert back to the tan colored path, don’t get tricked to stay on the wooden path! Like the other slides, pushing back on the control stick will cause Mario to slow down, something that can be useful when turning tight corners and turns. That also means pushing forward will make Mario go faster, use this while on safer paths!

Star 5 – Breathtaking View from Bridge

Head all the way back up to the top of the mountain. Remember that narrow path above the waterfall? Time to get the star waiting within the waterfall. Before you get there, hit the purple switch to have a brick block temporarily appear in front of the hole you need to get to. Jump over to the block to safely get to the star.

Star 6 – Blast to the Lonely Mushroom

Get to the area with the log bridge, the one just before you see Ukkiki the monkey,  and jump down to into the small gap just after the bridge. Here you’ll find a pink Bob-omb Buddy who will open up the cannon near the mushrooms. Head to the area with the vines on the wall and jump down to a lower level and narrow path. Follow it and hop into the cannon.

There’s a star above a mushroom you want to precisely aim at. Center your cannon directly above the star, the move cannon cursor up so that the bottom triangle is above the top of the cloud. This should throw you directly at the star!

Star 7 – 100 Coins Star

Collect 100 coins without dying or leaving a level to earn an additional star. Collect all the coins you see laying around but do keep in mind the following tips as you play. There’s a possible 137 coins to collect.

  • From the start, take the path down to find a ring of coins and a Crazed Crate.
  • You can get over 60 coins on the slide, specifically thanks to the blue coins that appear. Careful though, if you hit 100 coins on the slide, the star will appear and stay above that exact location.
