Reflecting on Mario: Is He Overrated, Underrated, or Has The Right Attention?

As the Year of Luigi comes to a close, I feel like this is the time to reflect on how Mario has been received over the years. Some people claim that he's overrated, while others feel like he has gotten too little attention due to characters like Luigi and Yoshi having larger franchises. For the people that think he's overrated, reasons come up such as that "he's hogging the spotlight" and that "he has no personality" and that Nintendo has been giving him most of the attention in the games. Now ever since the Year of Luigi has taken event, some people are starting to realize that Mario has been receiving less attention recently because Luigi is being promoted this year. You can get some debate here.

Now I ask you this question: Do you think that Mario is overrated, or do you feel like he deserves his attention or more?

He is fine where he is.
When small kids think of video games they think of Mario.

To be honest, I don't believe there are such things as 'over rated' or 'under rated' as it's completely subjective; hence, why I try to avoid those terms.

However, Mario does understandably get a lot of attention because, well, it's his games. Luigi is treated well, and perhaps even occasionally better than Mario, considering he has games of his own and even an entire year dedicated to himself, even though for the most part it wasn't necessary. If anything Peach is the one with not much attention considering she's the one getting 'kidnapped' in most mainstream Mario games; however, if 3D world is anything to go by, even she's being treated better recently.

If there is a year of 'x character' next year though, it would probably be the Year of Yoshi considering he's the only Mario character confirmed to have two games releasing in 2014, will probably be revealed for SSB4 in 2014, and Nintendo may even be holding back some extra surprises.

He's fine where he is, and isn't getting too much/too little attention. Ask a hundred people who they think of when they hear the word "Nintendo". A majority will think of Mario, I know I do.

He is good where he is, he's not overrated nor underrated. Mario is just well known because of Nintendo devotion to him and consistent usage of his franchise although I will admit that Nintendo needs to give him a break.

Gotta say I agree with the consensus here, he's got the right attention at this point.

I also feel like they are leveraging the supporting cast much better than they did in the past generation, hopefully that continues.

So far, he's gotten fair attention, maybe too much positive attention overall for some things

Like everyone has been saying, Mario has received a fine amount of attention. The thing is, Mario is Nintendo's top mascot, So Nintendo will always promote him to games. Some may say he got a bit too much attention last year, but Nintendo knows people will buy Mario nonetheless. Consumers almost buy games related to Mario all the time. We got a lot of games last year related to Mario, but this year, we only got two major games related to Mario. Mario & Luigi: Dream Team does not count as it was geared towards Luigi, and Mario & Sonic at the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics was a Sonic exclusive for Nintendo.
