Nintendo: There's No Such Thing As Too Much Mario

Company will never risk killing "the golden goose that lays the golden egg"

How much is too much? That's not a question Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime thinks we should worry about, at least not in relation to the company's iconic mascot Mario.

In an interview with GI.biz, Reggie was asked if the constant flood of Mario games could potentially harm the popularity of the series. He responded:

I would say categorically, no. And that's because our developers, starting with Mr. Miyamoto and going through the entire EAD development organisation, they understand the power of our franchises. They understand that the only reason these franchises have the power that they do is that they have to make sure that each subsequent edition is unique, different and offers something new.

They know that if they don't do that, we'll kill the golden goose that lays the golden egg. So it's something they are highly cognisant of, and even the executives on the business side, we hold that IP very dearly to make sure that every edition in the series is foundationally sound.

You can never have too much Mario, but for this year, from November 2011 to December 2012, it seems like it, does it? Still, though, while there were plenty of Mario games, Nintendo needs to bring out more DK and Zelda, and other popular franchises. Basically, Nintendo says they are NOT milking the Mario franchise.

What do you think about this? Do you agree or disagree with Nintendo?

What I think, is that all of the games simply began development at the wrong place at the wrong time and ended up overlapping each other; hence the large amount of Mario titles.

Nintendo is working on numerous other series with their other EAD studios, that's obvious. Each studio focuses on its own thing, so stating that they need to stop with Mario and work on another series is somewhat of an odd complaint.

I just wish they would try something fresh, I agree with Toadette's point, I'm getting tired of the same exact plot and dullness every game, how about we try something new? Something exciting, something cool, and not just something gimmicky. Nintendo has always had the magic touch with games, they just really need to get it back. I don't mind lots of Mario games by any means, just try to get that original, awesome style they been known for doing for years. And I think it's time to move away from NSMB, unless they're going to be something néw. XD

They will, they said they will only have one New Super Mario Bros. entry per console/handheld.

That at least sounds refreshing. Once NSMB U is released, that means that another NSMB game will likely not be out till the next Nintendo handheld/console is released (however, with the 3DS and Wii U being new I doubt that would be anytime soon).

Otherwise, I do agree that Nintendo has been milking the Mario franchise a bit too much in the recent years (NSMB series especially if you want really recent). I'm betting that it's due to Nintendo's profit loss (over the 3DS) that is forcing them to make so many Mario games recently; however, I would like to see newer games from the other franchises as well.

At least take some more time with the Mario platformers and release a few new Mario spin-offs would be a better trade off if anything.
