Announced at the Nintendo x DeNA partnership press conference (Tuesday, March 17, 2015)! Revealed on Thursday, October 20, 2016! The latest new console from Nintendo. NX is the code name for this console. Expect more information on Thursday, January 12, 2017. Release: March 2017 (Worldwide).

I'd go for a 2018 release. The Wii U is just really starting to see games and I'm sure there's plenty more to come. Also, a lot of people are still getting a Wii U. Announcing the next console is just... too early.

Well, the reason Iwata announced this now was because he wanted consumers to know that Nintendo is still in the console business and not abandoning it entirely in favor of mobile games.

One bit of info about this console is that Satoru Iwata says that Nintendo would want NX to surprise consumers. Source

Nothing new, I believe. Nintendo aimed their previous systems to surprise people, too.

"From a Nintendo perspective, we clearly have strength here in the Americas, we have strength in Europe and we have strength in Japan," Fils-Aime said. "That isn't necessarily true of some of our more direct competitors. We've also said publicly that we are already hard at work on our next home console and that's another element we'll be talking about much later."

I had this really good idea that it should be backwards compatible with GameCube, Wii and Wii U games, but that prolly won't happen...

He may be refering to a REAL home console they already started developing not including the NX

Wii U flopped at launch and I think if Nintendo were smart they'd boost their graphical capabilities to match the two other home consoles.
