Kingdom Hearts II Review

Kingdom Hearts II Review by MLYW

When you first see this game and notice some Disney characters you go, “Disney Characters? This game must stink.” However, you should not judge a video game by it’s cover. Kingdom Hearts was made from Square-Enix, the same creator as the sucessful Final Fantasy Series.

Story- 8/10

Kingdom Hearts II’s Story is told by cutscenes(most voice acted). Kingdom Hearts II begins where KH:CoM left off. Sora, Donald, and Goofy are asleep in pods as their memories are being restored. A new character, Roxas, is introduced, He seems like a normal boy enjoying his summer vacation, but his life changes when he encounters the keyblade. After a few days, he finds Sora in his pod as he merges with him(as he is a nobody) saying, “You’re lucky Sora. Looks like my summer vacation is over…” Sora then wakes up and travels to worlds both old and new battling the heartless and the Organization XIII. The story contains many plot twists, which make want to play more until you find out it. But, wait!? Some else happens! You must play more to find out, and ect. Kingdom Hearts II also introduces the nobodies, a being with no heart or feelings which is created when a person is turned into a heartless. There are 13 powerful nobodies who formed Organization XII.

Gameplay- 9/10

This is where the game truly shines. At first you cotrol, Roxas. However his abilities are limited at first. Then you take control of Sora, who is the main hero. You have Hit Points(HP), Magic Points(MP), and Drive Points(Drive). The game is played in real time so a battle may lurk in every corner. However, you won’t be fighting alone. Through every world, he will be accompanied by Goofy and Donald. Goofy excells in streangth but can’t use magic(though he can use MP), while Donald excells in Magic but suffers in streangth. You travel through world to world by a ship called a Gummi Ship. You can create a Gummi Ship through parts. Or on can use a blueprint and improve on it. When you travel through some special doorways, the gameplay is suddenly turned into a shooter! When you reach a world you might get a special party member exclusive to that world! (eg. Beast in Beast’s Castle) However, that member can only be with you in that specific world. (eg. Beast can only be in Beast’s Castle and not in Agrabah) Each party member have a special limit in which they used special techniques with Sora. However there are party members that can be called on almost anytime!(excluding Donald and Goofy). These are called Summons. They will act as party members and also replace ALL of them, tempararly. Summons will stay with you until your Drive Gauge runs out.  Early in the game, Sora will be able to use Drives. With a temparary sacrifice of a Party Member, Sora can change in a Drive Form. Each Form as their streangths and weaknesses. This will use up Drive points. Also gameplay might drasticly change in certain worlds.

Music- 7/10

The music is very beautiful. The opening song(Sanctuary) is a very awesome song. Also, each world has their own background music as well their own battle music. Well that pretty much everything.

Graphics- 7/10

The graphics in the opening and the ending are the best graphics in this game. The graphics in “between” are average for the PS2. Every world is very detailed and looks as they did in the Disney movies. The graphics sometimes change in different worlds(eg. Everthing turns halloween-ish in Halloween Town).

Great review, but I rated the game lower myself. The Gameplay felt like it was beefed up so much that Proud Mode played like Beginner's Mode. If they stopped adding all of these fancy abilities and limits, then i'd be ok with it.

Same with the storyline. Nomura has made Kingdom Heart's storyline so confusing now that it is almost impossible to depict. I didn't like Organization XIII or the voice acting, but meh, whatever.

Other than that, it was still an ok game. Still would recommend the first KH or even Re:CoM than KH2.

Can't argue about the story being overly complicated. :p

It's not even Disney-related anymore. Ever since Re:CoM, the Disney factor is repeatedly shoved up the ass of Nomura's stupid FF-related scenarios. :p
