Sooo, Mario Party. In this list, I will be scoring/reviewing all the minigames from Mario Party 1 for the N64, and 6 categories are used. These will include: Controls, Uniqueness, Fairness, Length, Appearance, and Enjoyability. All ranked A-E with A being the best. ENJOYABILITY MAY CONTAIN BIAS. I don't really have much else to say so I'll just get started.
Up first is Balloon Burst.
Controls: B
Uniqueness: C
Fairness: B
Length: D
Appearance: C
Enjoyability: B
Overall score: 20C
Well, it's a simple concept. Just pump enough air into a balloon to make it explode. It's not that unique, the length is rather short and the looks are OK-ish for the N64.
Next to the test is Bombs Away.
Controls: B
Uniqueness: B
Fairness: B
Length: B
Appearance: B
Enjoyability: A
Overall score: 25B
And just when you thought it would be all B's, there's an A. Controls are loose sometimes, but that's my main complaint.
Now we have Box Mountain Mayhem.
Controls: C
Uniqueness: B
Fairness: D
Length: B
Appearance: D
Enjoyability: D
Overall Score: 17C
Although Mario Party 1 had no heavily luck-based minigames, this minigame unfortunately still had an element of it. The coin places are completely randomized, and so are the boxes that suddenly send you flying backwards. Not one of the best.
The next minigame is Bumper Balls.
Controls: B
Uniqueness: A
Fairness: D
Length: A
Appearance: B
Enjoyablity: B
Overall score: 24B
The main reason the fairness grade is so low here is because of how it will end in a draw if not everyone but one is bumped off. Such a shame, it was close to having an overall A grade...
Being judged now is Buried Treasure.
Controls: C
Uniqueness: B
Fairness: D
Length: D
Appearance: B
Enjoyability: D
Overall Score: 17C
Oooh, this is pushing it as far as Mario Party 1 not having luck-based minigames goes. I guess when we hear the term "luck-based minigames" in Mario Party we think of options, not this. At least there are hints, otherwise fairness definitely would have been given an E.
Up next is Cast Aways.
Controls: D
Uniqueness: B
Fairness: C
Length: D
Appearance: D
Enjoyability: E
Overall Score: 14D
Really boring, drags out for too long, doesn't even look that good... If I'm honest, the appearance of this level is rather lazy.
The starter of Minigame Island, it's Coin Block Blitz.
Controls: A
Uniquness: E
Fairness: B
Length: C
Appearance: D
Enjoyability: D
Overall Score: 17C
Wow, the 17C score is pretty popular so far. This minigame is rather generic, and in my eyes it really isn't all that unique. It's what you do in a 2D mario game.
Now for Crazy Cutter.
Controls: A
Uniqueness: B
Fairness: A
Length: A
Appearance: B
Enjoyability: B
Overall Score: 27A
Hear me out. If you're thinking I'm mad for giving controls and fairness an A Grade, you should know that this controls perfectly for this sort of minigame. You think it's a little sensitive? Well that's good for this. Plus, you don't even have to worry about being the best, since everyone scoring over 80 points will get coins. This is indeed a great minigame.
From Super Mario 64's first screen but with Bowser, it's Face Lift.
Controls: B
Uniquness: A
Fairness: B
Length: A
Appearance: B
Enjoyability: B
Overall Score: 26A
Damn, this is a good one too! It's great that there is an undo button in case you really screw something up, but I always found it a little too easy to mess up. Only real complaint.
Next to be judged is Grab Bag.
Controls: C
Uniqueness: B
Fairness: D
Length: D
Appearance: C
Enjoyability: D
Overall Score: 16C
Ehhhh... Not a fan. You lose coins or you gain them. 'Nuff said.
Another "coin" minigame, it's Hammer Drop.
Controls: B
Uniqueness: B
Fairness: B
Length: B
Appearance: C
Enjoyability: C
Overall Score: 22B
Even though I didn't enjoy this so much, this actually has a decent score. Now I think about it, it's really not that bad. Unless you get knocked off with nothing or somehow manage to survive with no coins, you'll be making profit from this.
Now we have Hot Bob-omb.
Controls: B
Uniquness: B
Fairness: D
Length: E
Appearance: C
Enjoyability: D
Overall Score: 18C
A higher score than I would've thought. It's a simple concept of Hot Potato with a bob-omb.
Not your ordinary skipping rope, it's Hot Rope Jump.
Controls: A
Uniqueness: B
Fairness: B
Length: A
Appearance: B
Enjoyability: B
Overall Score: 26A
I really like it. Sometimes it lasts for a long time, since it goes until one is left (unless there's some secret timer I don't know about). The controls are, well, perfect, but it would be hard to screw up controls for a game like this.
The next minigame is Key-Pa-Way.
Controls: B
Uniqueness: B
Fairness: B
Length: C
Appearance: B
Enjoyability: C
Overall Score: 22B
It's an okay game. Not my favorite. Nothing else I can really say...
Here next is Mario Bandstand.
Controls: C
Uniqueness: B
Fairness: C
Length: B
Apperance: C
Enjoyability: D
Overall Score: 19C
The conducting just feels awkward to me. And compared to other music in the game, these are the worst tunes by far.
And now it's time for Mushroom Mix-up.
Controls: B
Uniqueness: B
Fairness: A
Length: A
Appearance: B
Enjoyability: A
Overall Score: 27A
It's a fan favorite, and it also happens to be one of my favorites. The concept is good, but the mushrooms are what gives it tht little bit more uniqueness. I have still held back from giving uniqueness an A grade though.
Another music-based minigame, it's Musical Mushroom.
Controls: B
Uniqueness: B
Fairness: D
Length: E
Appearance: C
Enjoyability: D
Overall Score: 16C
Waaaaay too short. The time limit is set on 30 seconds, but the game is always over in 3. Just 3. That's why this game just isn't enjoyable.
And now for Platform Peril.
Controls: B
Uniqueness: B
Fairness: B
Length: A
Appearance: B
Enjoyability: B
Overall Score: 25B
It's good... It's good. Yep. No major complaints.
Spookiness at its finest, it's Running of the Bulb.
Controls: A
Uniqueness: A
Fairness: A
Length: A
Appearance: B
Enjoyability: A
Overall Score: 29A!
We haven't yet seen an A grade for appearance... But this minigame is just epic. Even the victory music. Either everyone is a winner, or everyone is a loser. You all have to work together. There needs to be more like this!
Pirate enemies? It's Shy Guy Says.
Controls: A
Uniqueness: C
Fairness: B
Length: A
Appearance: C
Enjoyability: B
Overall Score: 24B
When did Shy Guy get that pirate outfit? It kinda suits him. Simon says, er, Shy Guy says press B... BUT WAIT HE MEANS A HAHAHAHAHA FOOLED YOU!!!!!!11111!!!!!111
Next to go through the scoring system is Skateboard Scamper.
Controls: C
Uniqueness: A
Fairness: D
Length: B
Appearance: A
Enjoyability: D
Overall Score: 21B
The overall grade may have barely sneaked into a B, but this is a very bad minigame. The end is almost always pointless button mashing and if you're up against computers you have no idea who's winning. Heck, it's still hard to tell even with real people. I did give appearance an A, since it's not where you'd expect to see a skateboard and it just looks good. It gives off too much of an epic feel for what this minigame is.
Now to judge Slot Car Derby.
Controls: B
Uniqueness: A
Fairness: B
Length: A
Appearance: B
Enjoyability: B
Overall Score: 26A
The controls are a bit... meh. Sometimes at least. They're obviously good enough for me to give them a B though.
Next on the list is Tipsy Tourney.
Controls: B
Uniqueness: B
Fairness: B
Length: A
Appearance: B
Enjoyability: B
Overall Score: 25B
No real complaints. It just doesn't get to the best it can, you know?
The last 4P Free-For-All minigame is Treasure Divers.
Controls: B
Uniqueness: A
Fairness: B
Length: B
Appearance: A
Enjoyability: C
Overall Score: 25B
This probably is Mario Party 1's prettiest minigame. Even though I don't really enjoy it, there's really nothing that bad about this minigame. I just don't know anyone that really likes it. Everything else is good...
The first 1vs3 minigame is Bash 'n' Cash.
Controls: B
Uniqueness: C
Fairness: E
Length: D
Appearance: C
Enjoyability: E
Overall Score: 14D
#MarioCharacterEquality #Don'tRapeTheGuyInBowserSuit
Next we have Bowl Over.
Controls: B
Uniqueness: A
Fairness: C
Length: D
Appearance: C
Enjoyability: C
Overall Score: 20C
A bit short. Although it's funny when you corner your own team into getting hit.
Here next is Coin Block Bash.
Controls: C
Uniqueness: D
Fairness: C
Length: C
Appearance: D
Enjoyability: D
Overall Score: 15D
There is hardly anything separating this and Coin Block Blitz. Except this is slightly worse.
Next to the test is Coin Shower Flower.
Controls: C
Uniqueness: E
Fairness: C
Length: B
Appearance: B
Enjoyability: D
Overall Score: 17C
I gave the uniqueness an E because it just feels like a random idea from behind the straining last thoughts of the designer.
Next to be judged is Crane Game.
Controls: C
Uniqueness: A
Fairness: C
Length: D
Appearance: B
Enjoyability: C
Overall Score: 20C
Controls are a little messy, and it's not easy to escape once grabbed... it's hard to say if I like it.
Next up is Paddle Battle.
Controls: E
Uniqueness: A
Fairness: D
Length: D
Appearance: B
Enjoyability: E
Overall Score: 15D
Stupid control stick rotating minigames. The first of many to come.
Now we have a maze of pipes... er, Pipe Maze.
Controls: A (duh)
Uniqueness: B
Fairness: D
Length: E
Appearance: C
Enjoyability: D
Overall Score: 17C
The controls are A because it's just one button press besides choosing a pipe. The rest should be obvious if you know the game, but if you don't, I'm bored and I've been working on this for literally hours now.
Skateboard Scamper's 1vs3 varaiation, it's Piranha's Pirsuit.
Controls: B
Uniqueness: B
Fairness: D
Length: C
Appearance: D
Enjoyability: C
Overall Score: 18C
Still higher than what it deserves. Not as high as the 4P version was though.
Walk the plank! Er, tightrope! It's Tightrope Treachery.
Controls: D
Uniqueness: B
Fairness: D
Length: C
Appearance: B
Enjoyability: D
Overall Score: 17C
Yeah, the boat controls are stupidly loose, and the game is a general mess.
The final 1vs3 minigame is Tug o' War.
Controls: E
Uniqueness: E
Fairness: D
Length: D
Appearance: C
Enjoyability: E
Overall Score: 10E
Wow, the lowest score by far. Why on earth is this 1vs3 and not 2vs2? Even so, the grade would probably remain at the lowest so far. It's not unique. It's been seen many times before. It's crap.
First up for the 2vs2 minigames is Bobsled Run.
Controls: B
Uniqueness: A
Fairness: B
Length: A
Appearance: B
Enjoyabilty: A
Overall Score: 27A
Isn't the music brilliant? And so is the minigame, at that.
Now we have Bombsketball.
Controls: B
Uniqueness: B
Fairness: B
Length: D
Appearance: C
Enjoyability: C
Overall Score: 20C
For me Bombsketball is a mixed bag. It's often rather short, it looks kind of weird and it's not amazingly fun but the controls are good and it's a rather unique concept.
And now for Desert Dash.
Controls: A (duh)
Uniqueness: B
Fairness: B
Length: C
Appearance: B
Enjoyability: C
Overall Score: 23B
A surprisingly high score again... I guess this really does help me realize that some minigames are better than I think.
If Treasure Divers had a cousin, it would be this one: Deep Sea Divers.
Controls: C
Uniqueness: B
Fairness: B
Length: B
Appearance: A
Enjoyability: C
Overall Score: 23B
Again, I'm still not a an like with Treasure divers, this time with some control stick rotating being an issue.
The last of the 2vs2 minigames, it's Handcar Havoc.
Controls: B
Uniqueness: B
Fairness: B
Length: A
Appearance: C
Enjoyablity: B
Overall Score: 24B
The button mashing with the control stick is a bit messy but otherwise good minigame.
The first 1P minigame is Bumper Ball Maze.
Controls: A
Uniqueness: A
Fairness: B
Length: A
Appearance: B
Enjoyability: A
Overall Score: 28A
Wow, the bumper balls were taken further. This is quite different to the 4P version, and it is slightly better... for what the concept is anyway. Great minigame.
Now we have Ghost Guess.
Controls: B
Uniqueness: B
Fairness: B
Length: E
Appearance: D
Enjoyability: D
Overall Score: 17C
The score gives this game way too much credit, really.
Next up is Ground Pound.
Controls: A (duh)
Uniqueness: C
Fairness: A (duh)
Length: C
Appearance: C
Enjoyability: D
Overall Score: 21B
Woooooah. That score is far too high. Trust me, this game is actually pretty crap.
Next to the test is Knock Block Tower.
Controls: B
Uniqueness: B
Fairness: C
Length: E
Appearance: C
Enjoyability: C
Overall Score: 18C
Rather short, but the concept is... interesting. Meh. Again, the score is rather high.
With a piece of in-game music named after it, it's Limbo Dance.
Controls: C
Uniqueness: B
Fairness: D
Length: C
Appearance: B
Enjoyability: D
Overall Score: 18C
...No comment... (Why are all these minigames except Bumper Ball Maze scored so high?)
A traditional game Mario-ized, it's Memory Match.
Controls: A (duh)
Uniqueness: C

Here to be scored now is Pedal Power.
Controls: E
Uniqueness: B

Isn't the music brilliant? And so is the minigame, at that.

For me Bombsketball is a mixed bag. It's often rather short, it looks kind of weird and it's not amazingly fun but the controls are good and it's a rather unique concept.
And now for Desert Dash.

A surprisingly high score again... I guess this really does help me realize that some minigames are better than I think.

Again, I'm still not a an like with Treasure divers, this time with some control stick rotating being an issue.
The last of the 2vs2 minigames, it's Handcar Havoc.

The button mashing with the control stick is a bit messy but otherwise good minigame.

Wow, the bumper balls were taken further. This is quite different to the 4P version, and it is slightly better... for what the concept is anyway. Great minigame.
