Arabic. The word is derived from the Arabic term amir-al-bahr, which means "commander (or prince) of the sea." The Crusaders were the first to pick up the term from the Arabs. Through the years and its use by European navies, the term was reduced to a combination of its first two words, becoming amiral. It eventually acquired a "d" to become admiral.
