The sun-drenched Parched Sands is one of the most brutal places around. They say it's so hot that if you're not packing some refreshments, you won't make it halfway through. The cacti around don't seem to mind, though, and it seems Monty Mole turned this into a business opportunity.
This board was modeled to introduce mechanics and events that are not a part of Mario Party 3 or Mario Party altogether. It contains certain types of "Action Events", animations that weren't known before, and more. Will you make this through the Parched Sands?
The effects of Happening Spaces, Board Events, and other mechanics will be explained below, if you'd like to go into the board blind, please ignore the spoiler tagged area.
Core Mechanics:
- Dehydration: The main gimmick of this board is that every player will be carrying drinks. The maximum amount a player can carry is 7 drinks. Every turn, the player will consume 1 of their drinks. If a player does not have a drink at the start of their turn, they will enter a Dehydrated state, where 1 dice block becomes 1-5 until that player is able to quench their thirst. Using a Mushroom/Golden Mushroom will result in the first dice block being 1-5, and the others will be 1-10 like usual.
- Maactus: This cacti goddess will have you answer 3 questions to know your personality. She will grant you an item based on how you answer. Nice answers will get you a good item, and evil answers will get you an evil item. The more you lean towards either side, the better the item, but she might think you're lying/despicable sometimes and you'll receive nothing. If you already have 3 items, nothing will happen.
- Bloober-Go-Round: This playful Bloober likes to spin round-and-round, so get ready to rotate the (Control Stick)! The more spins you do, the more drinks you'll get, but don't go too fast. If you're carrying 7 drinks, nothing will happen.
- Cactheevs: These lone Happening Spaces by the sandstorm will get you jumped by a Cactheef, and they will take 1 or more drinks from you. The amount taken will depend on your current placing and the current turn number.
- Drink Shop: Monty Mole will be here to sell the player drinks. Drinks cost 2 Coins each, and the shop has an inventory of 12 drinks. Once those 12 drinks are sold, the shop will be inactive until someone passes it with the ability to purchase at least 1 drink. When this happens, that player will be unable to purchase anything, but Monty Mole will restock 12 drinks again. Both Drink Shops share the same inventory, and you cannot purchase more than the maximum carrying capacity.
- Cactony: This Cactheef will allow the player to steal drinks from a rival of their choice. The more you pay, the more drinks he will steal. Cactony will never steal more drinks than the target player is carrying nor that the receiving player can carry. When targeted by Cactony, alternate (A) and (B) repeatedly to fight him off.
- Prof. C. Saguar: This renowned scientist of Parched Sands has created a contraption that can turn drinks into a star! Give him 4 drinks and watch the magic happen!
- Darude: The non-gated paths at the left and right side of the board will have the player go into a raging sandstorm. This will make them end up in 1 of the 3 paths ahead at random.
- Oasis: If the player passes a Blue Space on the Oasis circle, there's a 1/5 chance that they get a drink from it, as long as they wouldn't be exceeding maximum capacity. Additionally, if the player is standing on any space within the Oasis circle, they will not consume a drink at the start of their turn.
- The player will be unable to reverse themselves into any path that looks visually disconnected by the white path outline. There's 5 locations that meet this criteria: after Boo, after Prof. C. Saguar, behind the topmost Drink Shop, and the 2 sand slides at the left and right side of the board that lead into the double junction. If a player attempts to reverse into these areas, they will walk back the path they came from.
- The Bowser Phone, Dueling Glove, Lucky Lamp, and Magic Lamp will remove the player's dehydrated state for the current turn. This is a technicality due to how the game transitions away from board play when these items are used, and it's not likely this can be changed anytime soon.
- For Maactus' event, good answers yield 0 points, neutral answers yield 1 point, and evil answers yield 2. The total sum at the end of her questioning will determine which table will be used.
- For Cactony's event, a cycle means 1 press of (A) and (B). Pressing both buttons at the same time will not work.
Bugs, Glitches & Misc Info:
- The Drink Display shows above the screen boundaries, which cuts off the first player's name and drink count slightly depending on what display settings the player is using. This is getting corrected in the future once more information on the display is known.
- If a Bowser Phone, Dueling Glove, Lucky Lamp, Magic Lamp, or if a star is purchased, the Drink Display will disappear until drink counts are updated again. This will be addressed eventually.
- It's worth noting that for the Bloober event, it is possible to spin the Control Stick faster than the event can register, so it's better to do consistent spins. Also, any stuttering via Netplay will heavily affect your performance on this event.
- For Keyboard players, the Bloober event will allow them to press the combination of arrow keys that they use to move. Once all 4 keys are pressed, it will count as 1 rotation. Example: Pressing RIGHT, DOWN, LEFT, UP will equal 1 rotation.
- Massive visual improvements.
- Monty Mole now shows the maximum amount of drinks that can be purchased/held is 7.
- Chance of picking up a Drink from the Oasis increased to 20%.
- All rubberbanding mechanics now factor bonus stars.
- Dehydration now only affects 1 dice block as opposed to up to 3.
- Junction AI has been implemented, so CPUs will be able to chase stars properly.
Final words: I will be updating this board for balancing purposes (if necessary) and also aesthetics. If you have any suggestions, do feel free to message me. Also, if you find any glitches or bugs, report them to me so I can get them fixed.
