Wario’s Battle Canyon

Wario’s Battle Canyon is the fourth board in the original Mario Party for the Nintendo 64.

Board Map

It’s an island-hopping board with cannons as your main mode of transportation. There are seven possible Star locations on this map. Remember, once a Star has occupied a space, it won’t return to that spot until all seven locations have been used.

Overview

Five islands make up Wario’s Battle Canyon, each containing a single loop for a path. On first glance, it might seem like this board offers options on how to play and where you can go, but in reality, it’s very linear.

Exiting and entering an island is done entirely through the Bob-omb cannons. Each island has a cannon. When you reach the cannon, you’ll be forced into it and blasted off to the next island. Where you land is determined by the random space picker, and it’s entirely possible to get placed past all the enter events on the island and right at the foot of the next cannon.

Every cannon shoots players in a specific order. The bottom-left cannon blasts you to the bottom-right island, the bottom-right cannon shoots you to the top-left island, the the top-left cannon shoots you to the top-right island, and the top-right island throws you back to the starting island. You’d think this means you can at least plan where you’ll go next, but the Happening Space for this board has a different idea. Landing on it will reverse the direction of all cannons.

There’s a Fly Guy on the top-right island that can being a character to your location or send you to Bowser’s island. Pass Bowser and he’ll snatch 20 coins for you. In exchange, he’ll give you a swift kick and send you to a random island. Koopa Troopa is in the bottom-left island and Boo can be found in the top-left island.

So, you might be wondering what the deal is with all the cannons. Turns out the Black Bob-ombs and the Red Bob-ombs have some beef, and the only way to end the feud is to take first place in the match. Star goes into cannon, cannon shoots Star, and fireworks appear over the battlefield. And that’s how you end a war. Last place gets blasted out of Bowser’s cannon.

List of Events

Events spice up gameplay and (usually) give you a little more control over the strategy of the board. There are two types of events. Happening Events are those that activate when you land on a Happening Space. Passing Events are those that are triggered when you simply walk past the event rather than landing on it. Here’s what Wario’s Battle Canyon has going on:

Passing Event

Any time you pass a Bob-omb on any of the four main islands, you’ll get tossed into the cannon and sent to the next island. The cannons follow an hourglass path, starting from the bottom-left, then bottom-right, then top-left, then top-right.

Happening Event

And the cannon order can be reversed! Land on a Happening Space and the Bob-ombs will all switch the direction of their cannon. The switch will happen every time someone lands on this space.

Passing Event

The top-right island is home to a Fly Guy. Pass it to for a couple of options. Pay 10 coins to bring another player to your current location, pay 10 coins to go to the middle island with Bowser, or do nothing and be on your way.

Passing Event

If you use the Fly Guy to move to Bowser’s island, you’ll enter a path leading directly to Bowser. Pass the King of the Koopas and he’ll force you to cough up 20 coins or whatever you have on hand if you don’t have enough. This time, you actually get something! A swift kick from Bowser and you’ll be randomly sent one of the for main islands.

Item Availability

Unlike the rest of the Mario Party games that follow, the original does not have much of an item system. Instead, the Mushroom Bank lets you activate and deactivate certain items before you start a board. These items have features like typical Mario Party items, but they will only appear when they randomly activate at the start of a player’s turn. Two extra items let you disable specific passing events.
