Peach’s Birthday Cake

Peach’s Birthday Cake is the second board in the original Mario Party for the Nintendo 64.

Board Map

This here is a one-way board! There’s a single Star along the path that doesn’t move after a Star purchase.

Overview

Junctions? On my birthday cake?? Welcome to Peach’s Birthday Cake, a linear board with a fixed Star spot that won’t move, even after a Star is purchased. There actually is one intersection, but the direction you go is usually not up to you.

The idea for this board is simple. Avoid the traps and misfortunes and reach the Star at the top of the cake with at least 20 coins to snag it. Now, the traps all have to do with the Happening Spaces lined up around the outer portion of the cake. Land on one of these green spaces with at least 30 coins and you can pay to plant a Piranha Plant that’ll steal a Star from the next opponent that lands there. There’s a ton of these spaces, so Star-stealing is part of the strategy here.

And then there’s the Flower Lottery placed just before the Star spot. A Goomba will force you to pick between one of four seeds. Most seeds will let you continue the path towards the Star, but one seed forces you down a separate path where you’ll lose coins to Bowser, pass over dangerous spaces, and ultimately bypass the Star. Once a seed is chosen, it’s removed from the pool of options, and the list won’t reset until all seeds are chosen.

Like most boards in this game, there’s a Koopa Troopa at the start of the board that’ll gift you 10 coins each time you pass. No Boo on this board! The Piranha Plants got the Star-stealing covered.

What’s the story for this board? The cake needs more decorations, so Koopa thinks putting more “strawberries” is the way to do it. Okay! Whether you plant those Piranha Plant or not, the ending shows Stars you collected lighting up the cake. Top three players get to chill on the cake, and the last-place player gets left behind with a Piranha Plant.

List of Events

Events spice up gameplay and (usually) give you a little more control over the strategy of the board. There are two types of events. Happening Events are those that activate when you land on a Happening Space. Passing Events are those that are triggered when you simply walk past the event rather than landing on it. Here’s what Peach’s Birthday Cake has going on:

Passing Event

Just before the Star spot is the Flower Lottery. All players pass through this event and are forced to pay 10 coins to participate. Pick one of four seed colors to determine the path you take. Three seeds feature Toad and one seed features Bowser. If you get Toad, you get the “bad” seed and move towards the Star. If you get Bowser, you get the “good” seed and head towards Bowser while skipping the Star. The lottery will only reset once all four seeds have been picked.

Happening Event

Happening Spaces allow you to set Piranha Plant traps that steal a Star from anyone unlucky to land on your space. To set the trap, land on a free Happening Space and pay 30 coins to plant a “Strawberry Seed.” Once an opponent lands there, a Piranha Plant will snag the Star, send it your way, and disappear. Landing on your own trap does nothing, and landing on an empty Happening Space without at least 30 coins does nothing too.

Passing Event

Got the Bowser seed in the Flower Lottery? Off to Bowser you go. Pass Bowser and he’ll hand you a Bowser Cake with a mandatory 20 coin fee.

Item Availability

Unlike the rest of the Mario Party games that follow, the original does not have much of an item system. Instead, the Mushroom Bank lets you activate and deactivate certain items before you start a board. These items have features like typical Mario Party items, but they will only appear when they randomly activate at the start of a player’s turn. Two extra items let you disable specific passing events.
