A sudden update for Super Mario Party went live today adding additional online modes, specifically the ability to play boards online. Finally!
The sudden announcement brought Super Mario Party to version 1.1.0 adding an online option to both the Mario Party and Partner Party modes along with the Free Play section of the Minigames mode. Once the online version of a mode is selected, a Friends room or a Private Game room requiring a three digit password can be set up. Playing with random opponents is not possible. Up to two players can play per system. Friends can be invited using the Switch’s friend system.

All four boards, all 20 characters, and all 70 minigames are available to choose from while playing online, regardless if you have unlocked everything yourself or not. Although Super Mario Party has 80 minigames total, only 70 are playable online. The following minigames didn’t make the cut:
- Strike It Rich
- Time to Shine
- Take a Stab
- All-Star Swingers
- Rhythm and Bruise
- Pep Rally
- Wiped Out
- Fiddler on the Hoof
- Clearing the Table
- Baton and On
Yup, they’re all Rhythm minigames. As you can probably guess, the Sound Stage and River Survival modes did not get any online love. Same with Challenge Road and Toad’s Rec Room.
Mario Party fans have been dying for online play since Mario Party DS had the opportunity to do so back in 2007. A lackluster online mode was finally introduced to the series with Online Mariothon in the original launch of Super Mario Party although the simplicity of playing five select minigames in a row left many fans disappointed.
No word yet on other changes or updates in the patch. If you’d like to find someone to play with, try checking in at our Discord server! Online is finally here!
