A new Mario vs. Donkey Kong game for both the 3DS and Wii U was just announced, and in a surprising twist, the game is named Mini Mario and Friends: amiibo Challenge. The game is played just like any other Mario vs. Donkey Kong game, but the main idea here is that you’ll be able to scan in Mario themed amiibos to unlock different Mini characters, as well as their respective stages. The current list of supported amiibo include:
- Mario
- Luigi
- Peach
- Toad
- Donkey Kong
- Diddy Kong
- Bowser
- Bowser Jr.
- Rosalina & Luma
- All other amiibos (unlocks Mini Spec)
Anyone who purchases an amiibo after January 28 will find a download code for the game. A free release on the eShop, as well as a release outside of Japan, is planned for the future. The game features a total of 60 stages, some of which can only be unlocked by using each character’s special ability. These ability include:
- Mini Mario – wall jump
- Mini Luigi – higher jump
- Mini Peach – ability to float
- Mini Toad – ability to shrink, pass through small gaps
- Mini Donkey Kong – climb steep hills
- Mini Diddy Kong – clings on platforms when falling, can climb back up
- Mini Bowser – stomp jump during high falls
- Mini Bowser Jr. – ability to walk on spikes
- Mini Rosalina & Luma – ability to super jump next to wall
