The talent and enthusiasm behind the Mario modding community is unlike any other. Countless Mario titles have been deeply modified and experimented with, and this week Mario Party Legacy will be highlighting five different Mario games and series that feature a dedicated and fascinating hacking and modding community.
Day 1 | Day 2 | Day 3 | Day 4 | Day 5
Our last game in our Week of Mario Mods is one that just recently started to grow a hacking community. Super Mario Sunshine was released over a decade ago on the Nintendo GameCube, and in just the last few months, big leaps have been made to making custom levels and other interesting hacks a possibility. With that in mind, let’s take a look at some of the very recent hacks made by the modding community!

Above we see Luigi Circuit imported in Super Mario Sunshine from Mario Kart: Double Dash. There isn’t anything else added outside the beautiful sunset found in the original game, but it does show us that levels, whether from another game or custom made, can be imported. Thanks to Vertrex for the level. More info here.

Another level import, this time by MagicScrumpy. This one takes Bob-omb Battlefield from Super Mario 64 and gives it a Red Coin mission from Sunshine. More info here.
Shroom Ridge from Mario Kart DS. Another import from Vertrex. More info here.

An older custom level created last year. It’s a pretty challenging secret course level made by Wilko. More info here.
And now we’re getting into some of the exciting developments in the Super Mario Sunshine hacking community. Above, Vertrex shows off a small portion of his current hub world, Port Delfino. This is coming from what should be a larger hack. More info here.

And then we have Hotel Lacrima, a fantastic custom level that shows the true potential of Super Mario Sunshine hacking. The very small demo of the level shows off a brand new area, custom text, and other small tidbits that should make any Sunshine fan very excited to see what’s next. More info here.
