About two years ago, Mario Party Legacy took the opportunity to present five fan games that stood out as some of the best work to come out of the hacking scene, at least in terms of the Mario modding community. This week we’re doing it again. Instead of looking at individual fan games throughout the week, each day we will showcase a number of projects for a particular Mario game or series. We’d like to note that we will only be focusing on games in the 3D era. Nothing against the good ‘ol games of the NES and SNES, but some of the more recent games have seen impressive development and we’d like to put a spotlight on that.

Now on to our first game! Super Mario 64 has the biggest modding community of the group of games we’ll be looking at this week, and the advancements and updates made to the game make this fact clear. At this point, players can create completely brand new levels, change character models, import new music, create new animations, and even assemble new objects and functions. If you’ve got a creative idea, there is plenty to work with to make an extraordinary Super Mario 64 hack.

Super Mario 64 DS has picked up on a growing community as well. The two games are quite similar, so hacking and modding for the two are easy to transition into. Here are a few noteworthy hacks for both games that are available to play right now!
