The Legacy Lookback is a weekly video feature where Tyler Treese takes a look back in Mario history. Long forgotten characters, strange cameos and weird ports are all just a taste of what will be featured. Please enjoy the ride as we look back at Mario & Nintendo’s long history.
Nintendo games weren’t always exclusively on Nintendo’s own home consoles. In fact, Nintendo’s iconic arcade classic Donkey Kong has been ported to over 10 non-Nintendo systems! Join Tyler in the first installment of the Legacy Lookback which profiles the two Nintendo games that were released on the Intellivision: Donkey Kong and Donkey Kong Jr..

Have suggestions for what Tyler should check out next? Post it in the comments!
Note: I accidentally refer to Pauline as a princess in the video. I’m aware of the mistake but she’s a princess in my eyes <3
SHAME! SHAME ON YOU!
Just kidding, I thought she was Peach for the longest time 😛
Pretty cool and interesting bit of Nintendo history, and equally as fine execution in telling it as well. A few pictures would have been nice (since I personally am a visual learner) but not having them didn’t detract from the experience at all. For not having a lot of written notes you did a great job speaking xonsistently and smoothly, despite an “um” every once in a while; it was clear that you were enthusiastic about the topic, but a bit of fake enthusiasm would have been nice lol
Thanks for watching bro. I know I need to stop doing “ums” and “uhh”. Been working really hard at stopping that but a few still come out. I could’ve taken them out in post-editing but I wanted it to be one clean take overall. Definitely something i’m trying to correct especially for my podcast but its hard to correct years of doing something 😛
The Intellivision?
*Insert random Angry Video Game Nerd quote*
Great video, BTW.
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it.
Wow these ports were ugly! Plus, Jumpman didn’t even have pupils! Thats ugly and disturbing.
For reference here is a picture of the Colecovision port of Donkey Kong. Its quite the difference. This video was initially going to look at all of the ports of Donkey Kong (something I probably will do at a later date) but I just couldn’t get over the Intellivision versions.
Well, this one doesn’t look bad and at least doesn’t make me want to vomit.
Also great video. Definitely better than my videos. I’d love to see this turn into a series.
The plan is for it to be a weekly video feature.
Then I’ll be sure to tune in. 🙂
Thanks. I appreciate the support. Also have a lot of video content over at my website. Usually put up 3-4 videos a week and of course there is the weekly podcast.
I like the idea of the podcast. You should get a nice camera for a better picture and try having more light when you’re filming so we can see everything better. Other than that, I look forward to more.
Yeah, i’ll definitely look into a better camera. Since this is a long term series it should get better over time. Definitely a lot of areas to improve but i’m glad you liked the first one!
THE BOOGEYMAN. Oh, that’s just DK.
This just got me thinking about how unacceptable it would be today to have a port of a game look so drastically different from one another. Not saying that I disagree.
The only thing I can think of that is comparable nowadays is sometimes portable versions of games will be totally different games.
In the 80s and the 90s it wasn’t uncommon for the Genesis/Super Nintendo versions of games to be completely different (look at Aladdin for example) or for the NES version of an Arcade game be a completely different game (Strider, Bionic Commando, etc.). This was such an interesting, formative time for gaming.
I got a suggestion:
Creepy Secrets in Nintendo games (for a Halloween episode).
Thanks! I like it.
Glad you do 🙂
Entertaining! I didn’t even know what the Intellivision was before this 😛
Why don’t we look back at some tech demos?
Good idea. Definitely something I’d have to do some research on but I like it a lot.
hey can u sub to my channel? It’s called ThaAnonymousPerson. I’ll sub to yours.
sure!
hey can u sub to my channel? It’s called Ronin Durey. I’ll sub to yours.
Oh wait, you were Purple Bear. You already subbed 😛
not anymore… (my username)
Do one on Mario Bros arcade next! It was also on a lot of consoles.
One of my favorite games! Definitely will do something on it eventually.
And THAT, is how Nintendo conquered the world.
Graphics back in the arcade days: WOW! So realistic and awesome!
Nowadays (I’m looking at you, COD): Meh…
Honestly, I hate FPS games. Except for Yoshi’s Safari of course. 😛
Maybe SMW and then show all the enemies/items that were forgotten, such as the watermelon, urchin, Yoshi Coins, feather powerup, etc. It brings back so many awesome memories and revealed a whole new world of Mario. 😛
Was thinking about doing a feature on all the weird enemies in Super Mario Land. Thankfully I already have video of that stuff since I did a LP of that a long time ago.
I’m sure we’ll tackle Super Mario World someday. Its my favorite Mario game.
The feather powerup was actually in Mario Kart 8 as an easter egg in Sunshine Airport but I guess thats just a cameo.
Wow! I never knew that! :p
This is where I found it.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X-15mO3y1Kg&list=PLD6FB74D52DD47CE8&index=2
Andre is a really nice guy.
Dear god! Donkey Kong Jr. on the intellivison makes me want to vomit!
Suggestion: Super Mario Bros 2. 😛
