Battle Mode Revealed for Mario Kart 8

Battle Mode is back in Mario Kart 8, and this time it’s going back to its roots! The fan-favorite mode was revealed today, showing off a match between four players, all fighting against each other. This kind of Battle Mode was last seen in Mario Kart: Double Dash!!, although there is no word if any other modes from more recent Mario Kart titles will return.

One thing to note is that this Mario Kart is not using brand new battle maps, but will instead use the following eight tracks as maps to battle on:

  • Wii Moo Moo Meadows
  • GCN Dry Dry Desert
  • SNES Donut Plains
  • N64 Toad’s Turnpike
  • Mario Circuit
  • Toad Harbor
  • GCN Sherbet Land
  • N64 Yoshi’s Valley

What do you think of the latest iteration of Battle Mode? Is it a step in the right direction? Is it too limited? Comment below and let us know what you think!

I think it’s interesting that the battle mode is on modified versions of the game’s courses, rather than actual battle stages. I’d prefer battle stages, but this is neat.

From what I’ve seen, I don’t think they are modified – just the normal tracks. They picked tracks that you can easily turn around and go the other direction in.

Ah, I see, alrighty. To me, it just seemed like the items and hazards were in different locations, as GameXplain mentioned in his video preview.

I don’t mean to be picky or rude but GameXplain is a group of people, Andre Segers is the guy you are on about!

Yeah, I know, but some people don’t make the connection that I’m talking about GameXplain unless I say them 😛 Maybe I’ll refer to it as “Andre from GameXplain.” That’d be better xD

I adore elimination type battles, but I did like the battle specific courses more as it adds that bit more variety in terms of what stages you play on. I can just tell it’s going to get a little tedious playing the same courses over and over when both racing and battling. Still, if this is the price to pay for the return of elimination matches, I’ll be happy to accept the price.

YES!! Since I play my first Mario Kart I think for me “it would be awesome if I can battle in the race tracks”, now I finally can play!!

I think that they are going in the right direction with battle mode, however saying that I dislike that we will be battling on regular tracks. I don’t believe this is the final battle track selection as the retro battle tracks aren’t available(and they were made available on both Mario Kart Wii and Mario Kart 7)

The main site had a video preview of Battle Mode (and GameXplain uploaded it). To me, there seemed to be too many times when people were in the Pipe Frame with Standard Wheels…I think that’s a feature in the options. Similar to how you can place the CPU in Karts/Bikes only in past games, you can probably do Karts/Bikes/ATVs/Classic/any or something similar!

I predicted that they would use tracks as battle course’s and 6 out of the 8 I new they would use

Toad’s Turnpike will be INCREDIBLE in Battle Mode because of the cars and tight path!

I think Yoshi Valley will be great in Battle Mode because 1) It’s a big map compared to others, and 2) It’s a maze (sort of) which will make it awkward to find other racers!

Wow, returning to the classics, I see. The elimination style looks very fun. (I’ve actually never played it this way, as I never owned Super Mario Kart or Mario Kart 64. Not even on Wii Virtual Console, I know, shameful). But it looks much more fun than the old team battle formula.

Yeah I didn’t like Mario Kart DS in general, I thought that game had horrible graphics, but the Battle Mode was my favorite in the series, so far…

I actually like the idea of using racing tracks as battle tracks! And I love the elimination style as well 🙂

Basically, the Battle Mode we had in team’s with a time limit, instead of having to take player’s at I think was added to give Battle Mode a Single Player experience.

Just a small error. It isn’t Donut Plains, it’s Donut Plains 3.

I would rather the actual battle mode arenas. But I don’t play battle mode too often, so it wont bother me.

In Mario Kart Wii, they’ve made Battle Mode a whole lot better than the past games. Here they’ve done sort of the opposite. I’ve had expectation’s of Retro Battle Stages.

It basically gave Battle Mode a single player experience. Something to do after having done all cup’s in Grand Prix races (I can only do 50cc).

I’ve loved everything about Mario Kart 8 so far, but this battle mode severely disappoints me. The courses are horrible and (unless modified) are NOT meant for battle. Battle has free open world for you to drive around, so you can drive in any direction you want. But for this, we have narrow courses, with different directions and hazards? I say this as someone who was really big on Battle in MKWII days, but I’ve just been very disappointed with their choices of battle lately, first MK7’s and now MK8’s. I mean hey, I know I have to try it… Read more »
