Metroid Other M Stage Announced for Super Smash Bros. for Wii U

A brand new stage has been revealed for Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, this time coming from the Metroid series. Released with the image above, director Sakurai had the following to say:

Out of the blue, here’s a new stage–the Pyrosphere from Metroid: Other M! An enemy from Samus’s past may appear at any second…

Those that have played Other M will know that Ridley is fought here, making it clear that the character will be featured on the stage and not as a playable character. Of course, this is no confirmation, but the odds are no lower than ever before.

Given that I can’t envision a playable Ridley all that well, this isn’t overly surprising.
…makes me wanna get Other M and play it, btw. :p

How often might Sakurai confirm more stages?

Sakurai sees Ridley hits #1 on most requested character charts…and he still didn’t add him as a playable character? Good going, Mista Sakurai…you just made this game a little worse by refusing to give Samus her own Bowser.

Um… Ridley’s too big. It simply wouldn’t work with the game mechanics (he would either be so easy to K.O. that it isn’t funny because of his extremely large hitbox, or be extremely hard to K.O. because of the massive size of his attacks. Also to note is that he wouldn’t even fit on some stages. And where would the Metroid boss go? Dark Samus? Nah, not as nostalgic.) In some games with health bars, things would maybe work… but even then… So Sakurai has a choice, either work his but off on a complicated and annoying to play with… Read more »

I don’t think Ridley would fit either but you reasoning is odd. Olimar is only supposed to be 8 inches high and they sized him up. They could easily size down Ridley. The size doesn’t matter whatsoever

Wasn’t Ridley sized down in Super Smash Bros Melee opening?

For the 3ds Version, that would make a good stage.

Maybe what Sakurai is trying to get at is that just like Brawl, there are challenges. & maybe smashing on this stage 10 or 15 times may trigger a CHALLENGER APPROACHING icon. Than on this very stage, Ridley appears for U to fight & unlock!

That looks pretty cool. Hoping for a Mario galaxy, Sonic Lost World, and another Mega Man stage.

Dark Samus has a WAYYYY closer chance of being in Smash Bros. than Ridley.

If Ridley isn’t playable it’s not because he’s too big, it’s because Sakurai doesn’t find him interesting.

Sakurai would come up with a way to make “?” Block from Super Mario Bros. a playable character if he thought it would be fun.

They’ve confirmed new stages since Olimar’s debut ever 3 weeks, so maybe next week we’ll be able to see a newly confirmed stage (I hope it’s a Mario Wii U Stage from Super Mario Galaxy).
