According to producer Kensuke Tanabe, Paper Mario: Sticker Star had many more mini-games and different ideas in the planning, but were cut due to time. At one point, Bowser’s Castle, the final level in the game, was originally going to have all sorts of mini-games that players would play through as they headed for the final boss.

Making these mini-games would require events that would “show off their uniqueness” says co-director Naohiko Aoyama, but again, the team ran out of time and had to leave these ideas behind.
