What do people generally think of the new 9 style vs the old one?

By which I mean:
  • Minigames are now activated by specific spaces
  • Everyone moves at once
  • The game ends when you reach a final space

What do you guys generally think about the strengths/weaknesses of the new way? Is it overall better or worse? Would some other combination of changes had been better, or was the old way flat-out superior?

I haven't played 9 myself yet, but I know I loved all the other ones. The new way looks interesting tho, so I'm really curious.

I'm just gonna say, Mario Party 9 is not as good as it seems. At best you should only rent it or borrow it from a friend or something. =P

Mini-games are AWESOME. I'll give it that. The controls are good, there's only a FEW luck games (though there's some boss battles that are based on luck which can screw you over >__>) and the design of them is amazing. HOWEVER, in Party Mode, the mini-game payouts... are just too close. 1st gets 5 mini-stars, 2nd gets 3, 3rd gets 2 and last gets 1. Battle games are for ONLY 3 FUCKING MINI-STARS from everyone, and the payout is 6 for 1st, 4 for 2nd, 2 for 3rd, and 0 for last. Oh hey, this is only 1 FUCKING MINI-STAR more awarded for 1st and 2nd AND last gets nothing! That's a total game changer! [obviously sarcasm :p] But anyways...

Everyone moving at once... ugh. More luck, luck and luck. You have like NO control, and dice blocks are not very helpful. I want an item system that's GUARANTEED to help me, not A CHANCE TO HELP ME. When you use the 1-2-3 Dice Block and you need a 1, you get a 3. When you use the 4-5-6 Dice Block and you need a 6, you get a 4. When you use the 0-1 Dice Block, when you need the 0, you get a 1 and then get screwed over. Captain Events are also pretty luck-based. The Captain has an advantage over the others for each one... All you can do is pray.

The ending can EASILY screw you over just because of a FUCKING UNLUCKY DICE ROLL. The ending has several Bowser Spaces... If you're the Captain and you land on Bowser, you better pray you don't get "Lose half your mini-stars!". Otherwise, you're screwed. Also the Boss Battle game is worth a lot more mini-stars than usual, so make sure you do win that. =P There's also a bonus for being the Captain (50% more mini-stars) during the Boss Battle game, no matter what place you get.

In the end, the classic mode was better. You have more freedom, more replay value, more fun, less luck... If they do bring the Car Mode back, they should make it optional at least AND make it a LOT LESS luck-based. I'd love an actual item system, and boards with unique, fun objectives. =P

...I didn't intend to type this much, but I hope this helps you with your decision of getting Mario Party 9 or not. :) (It may seem rather negative, however, it IS the truth.)

I... really think it depend of people... Personally, I like it, it's not a total favorite, but I do like it and I can have some really good fun with it. But honestly, I really need to explain something... and in a smart way...

Of course, which Mario Party games doesn't have luck? The dices are always random, and this on any Mario Party game up to date! (except when you pick something specific). There are games based on luck too. But it's not these kind of things that will make me hate the game, no. I personally like when I can be lucky in some of them, it's fun to test your luck and all, to be enjoyed or deceived... In Mario Party 9, there are the dices (and the dices are items) and also some captain events which requires to be lucky with the dice of you want to suceed. There are also some events on the board which requires some specific number (high or low on the dice block, depending of the situation of where you are at.) And there are also some minigames or spaces that requires this kind of luck too. To these that says that they hate luck, I am not sure if the entire series is made for them... The minigame aren't each turn too, there are activated with the minigame spaces or if you have it at the same time than a dice (the blue space here). People move all at once (2,3 or 4 players can participate, which is unique to Mario Party up to date) although the captain (the person in front) have the control of the space that will be landed. And you need to travel toe entire board until the final boss space (there's an intermediate one too) to finish the board after defeating the boss (that you can choose in Party Mode except for the Bowser board).

Personally, if you like being lucky, be able to move together, all in a row (unlike the other games), the mini-stars (instead of coins or stars) with some events on the board and like a good and relaxing minigame... Well, if you like these kind of things, then the game can be a good choice for you to buy... I am fine with being all together, although I preferred a little bit more when we were able to move separately.) The minigames are also really good. There are also boss battles at the middle of the board and one other at the end of the board, that you beat all at the same time and the one with the highest score won the most amount of mini-stars... In here, I think it's a little bit more fair and equal, because whatever the place you're at, the amount of mini-stars you will have are separated like a battle minigame (unless you're last, of course).

So, there's some changes, although some of these are still staying a little bit, but there's way more changes than similarities on this game... so if you like the same kind of style but really can't handle any major changes, I am not totally sure if it's really for you, but it's a good game but depending of the characteristics, you can then have a better look at what you would got if you decide to take it.

All of this and dice blocks give you the worst Mario game yet. It was fine before all of this. I hope they revert it back to the classic version in MP10. If they really like the car, make it a board, just like star stealing and investing.

Personally.. I like the new system, they are both great!  :p
Ok,there's luck but Mario Party IS about luck! Also, there's no Chance Time in this game btw.
I find that even there is some flaws like some minigames aren't that useful or the Captain Events,it's fun!
I don't get it why peoples hate the new system,i found it great, original and fun! And it's less boring than the other mario parties in my opinion  :p
Even if there should be a little more strategy (which i think they will fix some stuff in Mario Party 10  ;) ) There's more suspence.
The game is more about getting stressed to get all yours ministars at the finish and screw others players in the way  :p And then, there's more stress & suspence than other Mario Parties!
Even if it's a bit short,i find it almost as good as the star system,it just have to upgrade like the old system did for years!
