FACT

Like humans, rats have a band of muscle around the esophagus at the entrance of the stomach. This band operates as a one-way valve. Rats differ from us because their valve really works; they also lack the advanced brain power to coordinate the muscles that would be involved in vomiting. If you ever called anyone "rat-puke," you were so wrong!

Just like fingerprints, everyone's tongue print is different.

FACT

True, and they travel over 50,000 miles, that's twice around the world. In fact, one pound of honey is the lifetime work of about 800 bees! "Busy as a bee," what an understatement!

The word "almost" is the longest six-letter word in the English language in which all of its letters are in alphabetical order.

CRAP

There are a few six-letter English words with letters in alphabetical order, for example: abhors, almost, begins, biopsy, chimps, and chintz. The expressive word "Aaaaeeeeeeey" does not count as one of these words, even if you've seen it in a Marvel Comic!

Thursday, November 17, 2016

The average person will spend almost two weeks of their life waiting for a traffic light to change to green.

FACT

True, even though you can have a period of fourteen months without a Friday the 13th, July to September or August to October. There is only one Friday the 13th in 2016, and that will occur in the month of May, so avoid ladders, black cats, or ignore all the ridiculous superstitions.

CRAP

The Golden Retriever is in third. German Shepherds are in second place, and the first place winner, as it has been for the last 24 years, is the Labrador Retriever. Every dog has its day!

Some Mexican tequilas have a worm in the bottle, which is supposed to have hallucinogenic qualities.

CRAP

So wrong, it is the cheaper mezcal drink that has the worm, not tequila, and it's not a worm but the larvae of a moth (Hypopta agavis). The hallucinations might be a fact because who wouldn't hallucinate after a couple of glasses of mezcal?

The blood in your body is blue until it is exposed to air.

CRAP

The blood leaving your lungs is bright red. When it returns after circulating in your body, it is dark red, never blue. Your veins only look blue because of a trick of the light, especially in pale skin, which makes the blood in your veins look blue. Only animals like the octopus and cuttlefish are true "blue bloods"!

Mother birds will abandon their babies if touched by humans.

CRAP

Obviously, you should never go poking around in a bird's nest, but birds don't have a good sense of smell, so if you find a baby bird or unbroken egg on the ground near a nest, return it to its nest or to a safe location. No egg-ceptions!
