We have our first tie, so I will break the tie by picking...
Super Mario Galaxy!

Ahhh. One of the most popular 3D Mario platformers, Super Mario Galaxy brings new ideas to the Mario franchise. Even though it is a pretty old game, I consider it one of the best 3D Platformers of all time.

First the plot. As always, Peach gets kidnapped by Bowser and Mario has to travel through galaxies to save her. Each galaxy provides something unique from the others, with several ways of collecting the power star(s). I really enjoyed the ones with powerups b/c they provide new opportunities or the player. Some galaxies rely on exploring, and sometimes I find a secret or two that I didn't know before. Besides power stars, there are special stars known as comets. You have to clear special objectives (like Daredevil or Purple comets) in order to get the star. Too bad the COLORED comets didn't return in SMG2... I also liked how you could unlock Luigi by collecting all 120 stars, but it was kinda annoying replaying the WHOLE game as another character. Maybe special comets for Luigi?
Either way, completing story mode was somewhat difficult, but it could've been a bit longer.

For a 3d game this has decent music. It sounds like they added a whole new soundtrack that sounded nice. ;) However, a few of the themes were too bland and could've used some improvement. Overall, the music was okay, but not superb. The graphics were indeed much better than the music. I enjoyed all of the sprites used, and it made all of what Super Mario is "new". It's like Mario in a different dimension! Even for new sprites like the Health Mushroom (or whatever it's called), Nintendo did a great job creating sprites for a 3d game using parts of older sprites. However in some parts of the game, the graphics were a bit bland. Like the graphics, the quality was a bit "eh".

To wrap it up, Super Mario Galaxy made some new things for the Mario series. (mainly 3D) I also liked how they added a new character (Rosalina) to support the series. With each level you play, new things occur. However, the game doesn't have high replayability, and can get boring after 100%ing it. Overall, a decent 3D Mario game.

Sorry that I'm late, but here's the MYSTERYYYYYYYYYYYYY game!

Newer Super Mario Bros Wii

maxresdefault.jpg

Do I really have to say it? Okay, fine. Newer Super Mario Bros Wii is definitely a great Mario platformer with all new ideas transformed into this one game that is definitely better than the others. With Hard Mode and a bonus world, the game did a great job of adding extras to add more replayability and "fun" into a game that is both fun and challenging.

First, the gameplay. These levels are all very unique and I enjoyed all of them! Each one was unique than the others; it felt like there was a different setting in each one! Uniqueness = SPOT ON! Not only that, but there are star coins hidden in the levels, and in four of the levels, there are switch palaces. Although these were pretty easy to find, there were a few secret exits that took me forever to find. In my 1st time playing it, I used no walkthroughs, I swear. :p As stated above, there were a few star coins and secret exits that took me a bit longer than expected to find. Definitely shows a good amount of replayability. Also, when you beat the game, there is something called "Hard Mode" that makes the game way more challenging and interesting, and I gotta admit, the levels were insane considering you only had such a small time limit and about 250 "seconds" on the time. Besides secrets, the game did a great job of showing off these new features that NSMBWii didn't have, such as those fat (blue) pipes you can walk through, all new bosses (like Giant Fuzzy), and shops/challenge houses! And if that's not enough, there is a new power up called the Hammer Suit, in which you can throw hammers! For a new powerup, the development team did a great job with the artwork and the functionality. It feels like Nintendo made this powerup; the item itself has no "glitches" that may interfere the item itself in gameplay. Overall, the gameplay is superior the first time through, but I kinda wish there were more levels added on every 3~6 months, or possibly new modes. Definitely great gameplay with originality in it as well.

Now the graphics/music. The artwork itself was like any other game, but maybe a bit better. For the new Hammer Suit item, it was well-designed and created. The other items were also well-designed and excelled in originality (artwork was just like NSMBWii). Definitely a nice thing I want to see! Also, the world map was very nice, and I liked how there were many item/challenge houses, but I kinda wish that you could've interacted in the world map a bit more, like hidden enemies (NSMBWii), or maybe certain paths you could take by collecting a certain amount of Star Coins (NSMBDS). Even though the graphics generally are great for a 2013 game, the music/soundtrack was even better! I liked how the team was able to come up with unique soundtracks like remixes of older games on a few of them. Like what I said, I liked how they made it more "different" then what NSMBWii was, otherwise the music would've sounded boring. Nonetheless, the music is one of the best things about the game. On my Forum profile, I have used one of the soundtracks (Final Boss Theme), and I will definitely be adding more soon! Those castle-themed songs are just sooooooo addicting! In general, the songs are great and sound more appealing than ever. All of the themes were unique and sounded very "nice". :p

Newer Super Mario Bros Wii is definitely a great game. With tons of time and effort put into it, this game really can make your Mario platforming adventures more fun! Definitely a high amount of replayability, and if you have friends that like Mario platformers, why not tell them to come over to your house to play it? If you have a bit of data on your SD card left and want a platformer that's very unique and fun, Newer Super Mario Bros Wii is the game for you. Definitely wouldn't be surprised if there was a sequel coming soon. :D
