Everything We Know About the Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga Remake

Over the past two weeks, rumors and little bits of interesting data started popping up suggesting a remake of Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga was in the works. It wasn’t just a single piece of evidence either. We’ve had several updates all pointing towards this unannounced 3DS title, so we’ve compiled everything there is to know.

It all started when recognized hacker @SciresM found the Title ID for both Ever Oasis and the unannounced Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga DX. The game titles were discovered tucked away in a 3DS eShop server listing, a process in which you can learn more about here. His tweet:

Ever Oasis is a title set to release next month, while the Mario & Luigi name-drop is the first we’ve heard of the game. Just a day later, SciresM followed up on his report with a look at the home menu icons for the games:

Yup, there it is. Take note that he also found the icon for Ever Oasis as this is important in determining these findings as legitimate. Just a few days ago, Kotaku verified the icon for Ever Oasis when the very same icon was seen on a demo unit at a preview event. Looks like the icons check out.

It wasn’t long before a more concrete name was found for the remake. The game is listed as Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga+ Bowser’s Minions in the English list of names, while the Japanese listing sticks with a name closer to what was originally reported withマリオ&ルイージRPG1 DX.

Was anything else revealed besides the name and the icon? Yes, actually. The file size for the game is around 550MB. For reference, Paper Jam was released as a 512MB download, while Dream Team came to a total of 849MB.

So what’s next for this not so mysterious title? E3 2017 is just about a month away, so you shouldn’t have to wait too long before hearing more. Until then, let’s speculate away!

I would like to revisit superstar saga if it’s very similar to the original. Though the “Bowser’s Minions” part kinda seems iffy… as to what it could be.

Very intriguing. I’ve always found SS to be an interesting installment in the series, what with Cackletta’s intentions, a twisty-turny plot, the surprise return of the Koopalings, the Hand abilities, and of course the Bros. Moves. I think I might get it as soon as it releases.

I have 20 dollars in Eshop cards. I want to buy Superstar Saga, but I want to be able to play the potential DX version. I’ll just have to wait till after E3 to know what to use them both on.

  • Brodes

I wonder if it’s gonna be a port of the old game with some new content, or an entire remake with new modern sprites and everything.

    • E.Gadd

      I hope it’s the latter!

      • Mario_Comix

I can’t see it NOT being the latter, lol

    I HAVE FURY ENJOYMENT!
I always wanted to see this remake. M&L:SS was one of my first game, and also the game I replayed the most.
Can’t wait to see the Bros. Moves with the (presumably) Dream Team artstyle in action. Definitely a day-one buy for me 😀

In that case, are they going to keep the original Bros. Moves? Or will they just replace them with new Bros. Moves, like the ones in Dream Team and Paper Jam?

      • RobinFTW

I’m sure they’ll keep the same Bros. Moves. They can’t just replace all the original moves with new ones, or else it’s not M&L:SS.
What they could do though, is to add some new ones.

        • BossBlitz

Tbh I liked the old Bros. Moves, and if they do more in that style, I’d love this game even more.

  • Spiny Bro

I just hope the game is harder, those bro moves were WAY too OP, even against bosses.

I am definently excited though, seeing Fawful in this new style will bring me chortles.
