Super Mario Odyssey Announced

Nintendo has announced that Super Mario Odyssey will be released on the Nintendo Switch during the holidays of 2017. The latest Super Mario title returns to the sandbox styled gameplay of Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Sunshine. A wide variety of locales were showcased, many of which were surprisingly new to the series.

Super Mario Odyssey was one of many games announced during today’s Nintendo Switch presentation, including Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Splatoon 2.

This game has revived my faith in Nintendo. Breath of the Wild, Splatoon 2 and the rest were awesome, but this was truly the highlight for me at the Switch Presentation.

At first I was scared it was a sequel to Sonic 06 but when Mario started traveling it revived my faith as well 😛

I’m really glad it’s not yet another linear game. Going back to open worlds is awesome, plus it’s all new worlds. There seems to be a lot of new characters/enemies too which is something that’s been missing in many recent titles. It looks refreshing and unique. Definitely looking forward to this next installment!

Could this be?! Bowser has a LEGIT reason to kidnap Peach?!?!?!

    • MKKINGZ

Arranged marriages, Mario really is involving himself too much with the real world.

  • Yeah! This cap will come in handy. This was definitely the highlight for me. Love the creativity.

They are going really WAY far out left field with this Mario and I can’t emphasize how much I love that!

There is so much to talk about in this trailer. The new hat mechanics and obvious overall Hats theme(Top hats, Chef hats, Sombreros, Construction hats, Baseball caps, Explorer hats, etc.) it’s clear you will probably be getting brand new abilities for each of these worlds.

And the WORLDS! They are seriously bizarre for a Mario title. Not a single one is typical Mario Grass, dessert, snow fare. So far it’s all new.(and not ‘NEW’ in the NSMB sense lol). I’ve seen speculation that Mario is actually travelling across dimensions via the Hat Ship and that kinda makes a lot of sense to me here based on just how contrasting the worlds are.

They even emphasized that there are brand new Bosses.

And what’s the deal with New Donk City and all those Donkey Kong Country references? This game is seriously weird and I hope it gets weirder!

    • Mario_Comix

Well, all the 3D Mario games (save SM3DL) introduce several new boss characters. In some ways, though, each world is really strange, I mean we have those strange fork characters and the real-proportion humans who are just…weird! Haha

  • Mario_Comix

I can’t wait for this game, I’m so hyped! Love how it’s New Donk City, and I can’t help but wonder if the Kongs will show their faces.
I also want to know about Crazy Cap and what features this store could be bringing to the table. Mario is also quite a bit more agile/nimble this time around!
Also, did anyone else notice that the moon appears to be overtly looming in every world?

    • E.Gadd

Calling it now, the Moon is probably the final stage/world where the Rabbit folks are from. I’m expecting a Outer Space Moon/Posh Wedding Chapel themed world as the final stage as opposed to typical Bowser Castle stage.

      • Mario_Comix

Now that you mention it, there is logic to that reasoning, considering the “Man in the Moon” equivalent in Japan is a rabbit making mochi dessert.

  • E.Gadd

More Speculation on my part! I feel fairly confident that there are actually TWO MORE (Moon)Rabbits than we have been led to believe, and I think I can prove it.

First pay very close attention to the new living Mario Cap character. Look at his eyes, how they are red and how they have a very thick black lining around them, more pronounced than you’d expect really. Now look at the eyes of the Rabbit henchmen. Yep, they’re the same kind of eyes! Red pupils with a pronounced black lining around them. I’m thinking Mario’s cap is actually the fifth member of this group, the lone rabbit who didn’t go along with the head honcho’s plan. And now he’s(she’s) helping Mario.

But why is he a hat? You must be thinking that, me too actually. Perhaps these rabbits can transform into hats at will? This would help explain where I think the other extra rabbit I mentioned actually is.

Go back and look at the face on the rabbit gangs’ air-ship. It’s another rabbit! But he looks way more menacing, and he has different facial features than any of the other rabbits shown… is he the rabbit that(I think) inhabits Mario’s new hat? Nope. This guy is going to turn out to be the rabbits’ actual leader. That’s why they all just look like henchmen, that’s all they really are!

And so for my final bit of speculation, the true leader of the rabbits is the white top hat Bowser is wearing! In hat form he is taking advantage of Bowser’s Peach obsession to manipulate him, and thus get Bowser(and his armies) to do the bidding of the rabbits. But what could their goals actually be? Who knows! Nice to have a more original story for once in a Mario game though huh? 🙂

    • Luigiguy567

Nice theory! I think the villains are rabbits because there is a strong focus on hats, and this would be a refrence to the magic trick where rabbits are pulled out of hats.

As for their motives… I’ve got nothing.

      • E.Gadd

The rabbit in the hat trick! Nice! I bet you’re right that that’s part of the inspiration.

        • Toblet

Do you think the rabbit at 1:15 has any relevance? Perhaps I just want it to because it’s cute. =p

  • MKKINGZ

So this was the Rabbids x Mario crossover, I’ve got say they blew me out of the water with this one : p

  • XT

I was absolutely shocked when I saw Mario come out of that sewer because in the beginning of the trailer I didnt even think it was a Mario game. Also before Bowser and Peach showed up in the trailer when I saw the city I thought that the game was not going to have anything to do with them but instead had something to do with Pauline and Donkey Kong, since the place is called New Donk City which is obviously inspired by New York City which is where Mario originally lived.

  • Blobbo

What’s up with Mario’s overly detailed hair.
    Impressive.
