First and foremost, this iteration of Mario & Sonic will feature over 30 playable characters, but don’t expect to see them all available in each event. Character restrictions from the 3DS version return, relegating certain characters to a specific event or two. The standard Mario & Sonic roster is playable in all events, but the newcomers are the ones who suffer. That said, Miis play a large role this time around, sporting costumes and other unlockables.

The game is said to feature 14 different Olympic events. Rugby Sevens, Football, and Beach Volleyball each come with a separate mode known as Duel Events where items like Bullet Bills and Red Shells are made available and players aim to score Duel Points by tackling, scoring, and the like.

A new Heroes Showdown mode makes its introduction this time around.  After you achieve first place in all the other 17 events, this new mode unlocks, allowing you to join either Team Mario or Team Sonic and duke it out in a knockout rounds. Events here are random!

Amiibo integration has also made its way into the game, this time allowing you to scan in either a Mario or Sonic amiibo to face off with characters from that character’s respective worlds. Play and win as your Mii to unlock a special Mario or Sonic costume, along with the usual coins and rings.

The most interesting news comes from what was not announced. Particularity, no mention has been made about any kind of Dream Events, a staple to the series that adds in locations and themes from both the Mario and Sonic series. Any word of online play also seems to missing, so it looks like this one is restricted to local multiplayer only.

Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games for the Wii U is set to release on June 23 in Japan and June 24 in North America and Europe.
